הר העצה הרעה הופיע לראשונה בשנת 1976 ונחשב לאחד משיאי הקלאסיקה העברית החדשה. כאשר תורגם הספר לאנגלית גמרו עליו את ההלל מבקרי הספרות הנודעים ביותר. "עמוס עוז הוא אחד מכותבי הפרוזה הגדולים ביותר בספרות בת זמננו", כתב מבקר ה"טיימס". המוסף הספרותי של "ניו יורק טיימס" כלל את הספר ברשימת הספרים הנבחרים לשנת 1978.
