Das Elsli trat nach elf Uhr ganz leise in das Haus auf dem Eichenrain ein. Die Tür des Wohnzimmers stand offen, und Nora, die in ihrem Sessel saß, schaute eben auf die Seite der offenen Tür hin und erblickte auf einmal das Elsli; hereintreten hatte sie es nicht gehört. Nora schaute erstaunt nach dem Kinde hin. Das Elsli sah anmutig aus; es hatte sich heute sorgsam seine hellbraunen Haare glatt gestrichen, nur um die Stirn herum kräuselte es sich leicht. Die Mutter hatte auch ein sauberes Schürzchen und ein Tüchlein um den Hals erlaubt, weil es zu der Herrschaft gehen musste.

Eben war ein großer Reisewagen am Hause des Arztes vorübergefahren, worin ganz allein eine schwarze Frau saß. Die Doktorskinder standen alle vier im Garten und schauten still dem Wagen nach, denn sie empfanden, wie traurig diese Reise sein musste. Die Tante stand oben am Fenster und schaute mit ihnen dem Wagen nach. Als er unten um die Ecke verschwunden war, winkte sie dem Fred, heraufzukommen; sie stand in seinem Zimmer.

Seit dem Tage, da das Elsli zum ersten Male bei der kranken Nora eingetreten war und sie sich bald gut verstanden hatten, war das Kind die tägliche Gesellschaft der Nora geblieben. Von Auslaufen und Besorgungenmachen war nie eine Rede gewesen, denn Nora konnte es täglich kaum erwarten, dass das Elsli erschien, und bis zum letzten Augenblick seines Bleibens ließ sie es nicht von ihrer Seite weg.
