Eine der großen Dystopien des 20. Jahrhunderts - aber lustig. Hier bleibt Ijon Tichy, der Held so vieler lemscher Erzählungen, ausnahmsweise auf dem Boden, das heißt auf der Erde. Es bedeutet allerdings nicht, dass es ihm hier langweilig würde, ganz im Gegenteil: Er wird beschossen, eingefroren, aufgetaut, betäubt, benebelt, beglückt und bekommt schließlich noch einen Rattenschwanz verpasst. "Der futurologische Kongreß" ist eine der großen Dystopien des 20. Jahrhunderts – allerdings deutlich lustiger als die Konkurrenz von Orwell, Huxley oder Atwood.

Che succede se un gruppo di cinque o sei inglesi si ritrovano attorno ad un fuoco, la sera della Vigilia di Natale come consuetudine, sorseggiando gin e whisky, per raccontarsi storie (assolutamente veritiere) di fantasmi? Succede che i fantasmi compaiono davvero, e all'ennesimo giro di gin, non ci sono più dubbi. Jerome K. Jerome stesso, con una sfrenata ironia britannica, prende le vesti del raccontatore in prima persona, riferendo di spiriti che più che farci morire dalla paura ci fanno morire dalle risate.
