At a time when violent images of the Muslim world dominate our headlines, Western audiences are growing increasingly interested in a different picture of Islam, specifically the idea of Muslim nonviolence, and what it could mean for the world. But is nonviolence compatible with the teachings of Islam? Is it practical to suggest that Muslim societies must adopt nonviolence to thrive in today’s world? Where is the Muslim equivalent of a Mohandas K. Gandhi or Martin Luther King Jr.?

La nascita del Califfato di Siria e Iraq ha prodotto, tra gli altri disastri, l'acuirsi del conflitto lungo le linee dello scisma tra sunniti e sciiti. Chi sono oggi i musulmani? In che cosa si differenzia la loro tradizione religiosa rispetto a quella cristiana? Nel ripercorrere la storia, i principi del credo, i precetti del culto, sino alle forme e alle correnti del pensiero religioso islamico, l'audiolibro fa emergere le contraddizioni di un universo tutt'altro che monolitico. Un universo assai diversificato a seconda delle aree geografiche, oggi diviso tra modernizzazione e radicalismo, ma destinato a giocare un ruolo di primaria importanza.

Il 90% circa dei musulmani si riconosce nella tradizione religiosa sunnita, che rappresenta l'"ortodossia" rispetto alla corrente minoritaria sciita, sorta dalle lotte civili per la successione dopo la morte del Profeta. Oltre a delineare un quadro storico e dottrinale del sunnismo, il volume fa chiarezza sulle correnti che agitano il mondo sunnita contemporaneo, da quelle riformiste e moderate a quelle conservatrici e radicali, a quelle più estremiste che hanno rivendicato il ritorno al califfato tradizionale.

Nonostante il crescente pluralismo culturale e religioso, la Chiesa cattolica resta una presenza profondamente radicata nel tessuto sociale del paese e ben visibile anche sulla scena pubblica. Nel dibattito sui valori è spesso terreno di scontro, ma anche punto di riferimento non solo per i credenti. Come si spiega tutto questo? E come sono cambiate, dal dopoguerra a oggi, la Chiesa e la società italiane?
