La Maternitat d’Elna descobreix un dels capítols més dramàtics, tendres i desconeguts de la nostra postguerra. Entre 1939 i 1944, la suïssa Elisabeth Eidenbenz va salvar la vida de 597 infants. Eren els fills de les exiliades catalanes i espanyoles que malvivien en condicions penoses als caps de refugiats republicans de Sant Cebrià de Rosselló, Argeleres i Ribesaltes, i que van tenir la sort de ser acollides a la maternitat que va crear Eidenbenz.
