Story0
Aristotle's Poetics (335 BCE) is the earliest surviving work of dramatic theory and first surviving philosophical treatise on dramatic or literary theory. The work begins with a preliminary discourse on tragedy, epic poetry, and comedy as the chief forms of imitative poetry. By "imitative", Aristotle means the imitation of action in words as a creative process. He distinguishes comedy, tragedy, the satyr play, lyric poetry, and epic poetry by their differences in musical rhythm, harmony, meter, melody, nature of the characters, and the manner in which the narrative is presented.

Story0

Rousseau's Social Contract remains, after a quarter of a millennium, one of the most controversial texts in the history of political philosophy, variously seen as a model for participatory democracy, a blueprint for totalitarianism, and several points in between. In addition to Rousseau’s magnum opus, this production includes an introduction by George Douglas Howard Cole, an English political theorist, economist, writer and historian. Also included are three discourses that Rousseau composed apart from The Social Contract.

Story0
This book restores the Middle Ages to its true form—not as caricatured by the Enlightenment or romanticized by later centuries, but as it truly was: contradictory, luminous, and trembling between faith and reason. Here, the history of philosophy is not a dry sequence of doctrines, but a living journey of human thought—from dogma to freedom, from darkness to light, from monastery to university.

Story0
The doctrine of Hermogenes has this taint of novelty. He is, in short, a man living in the world at the present time; by his very nature a heretic, and turbulent withal, who mistakes loquacity for eloquence, and supposes impudence to be firmness, and judges it to be the duty of a good conscience to speak ill of individuals. Moreover, he despises God’s law in his painting, maintaining repeated marriages, alleges the law of God in defense of lust, and yet despises it in respect of his art. He falsifies by a twofold process—with his cautery and his pen.

Ancient Romans liked money. But how did they make a living and sometimes even become rich? The Roman economy was dominated by agriculture, but it was surprisingly modern in many ways: the Romans had companies with CEOs, shareholders, and detailed contracts regulated by meticulous laws; systems of banking and taxation; and a wide range of occupations, from merchant and doctor to architect and teacher. How to Make Money gathers a wide variety of ancient writings that show how Romans thought about, made, invested, spent, lost, and gave away money.

Imagine a world where shadows are reality, where knowledge is but flickering illusions cast upon a wall. This is the chilling vision of Plato's Allegory of the Cave, a philosophical parable nestled within The Republic. More than two millennia old, it remains one of the most haunting explorations of truth, perception, and enlightenment. In this tale, Socrates describes prisoners trapped in a dark cavern since birth, chained so they can see only the wall before them. Behind them burns a fire, casting the silhouettes of unseen objects.
