戦時下で言いたいことは言えず、書きたいことも書けない時代の作品です。太宰にしては歯切れの悪い作品になってしまったことは仕方のないことでしょう。ただ、自分の作品の底に流れるものを太宰はここではっきり言っています。

太宰治30歳の時の作品で、1940年（昭和15年）に文芸雑誌「新潮」に掲載された短編小説です。太宰が得意とする「女性の一人語り」の作品です。題名の「きりぎりす」は芥川龍之介の代表作「羅生門」の冒頭と最後に、この世の儚さ、荒涼としたさまを表すモチーフとして登場します。芥川龍之介を敬愛してやまない太宰、渾身の作品名と言えるでしょう。

タイトルにある「善蔵」は最後まで出てきません。太宰が甲府から三鷹に越してきて四日目からの私小説です。友人の「故郷なんてものは、・・・・」は、太宰のその当時の故郷への心情を写し取っており、大変興味深い作品に仕上がっています・

太宰治の短編集「きりぎりす」から、珠玉の短編を集めました。収録作品は「燈籠」「姥捨」「黄金風景」「畜犬談」「おしゃれ童子」「皮膚と心」「鷗」。太宰中期の、精神的には一番安定し、筆が走っていた時代の作品集の前半です。

いわゆる「紀行文」的な小説です。実体験をほぼそのままなぞっているようですが、作者後記で「旅館、料亭の名前は、すべて変名を用いた」とわざわざ断っています。佐渡に行きたくならない「紀行文」ですが、昭和15年31歳の太宰の心の中が偲ばれる小品として評判の高い作品です。

『パノラマ島奇談』から『影男』へ続く人工世界がテーマがテーマになっている作品のうち、もっとも残虐で江戸川乱歩色が満載の作品です。連載もので、読者を対象に「犯人探し」を懸賞をかけて募集しました。犯人の正答率は9割以上であったといいます。

誰でも、今思い出すと恥ずかしくて記憶を永遠に封印したくなることってありませんか。太宰治の生き方は嫌いでも、それでも太宰に惹かれてしまう人が多いのは、この作品のように自分の恥ずかしい過去を包み隠すことなく、淡々と描き切ってしまえるところにあるような気がします。思い当たる人は聴き切るのに勇気が必要、かもしれません。

これも太宰治の作品です。他の作品とはちょっと色合いが違いますが、太宰得意の女性独白体が余すところなくちりばめられています。女性関係ではいろいろアレな太宰ですが、だからこそ、この切ない女心を描けたのでしょう。

太宰の最初の妻、初代との「水上心中事件」を題材に描かれています。相当部分で事実をなぞっていると言われていますが、太宰が過去を捨てて新たに歩を進める決意が描かれた貴重な作品でもあります。

原稿用紙八枚の短編ですが、太宰が後悔と挫折の後にもう一度一歩を踏み出すきっかけになったであろう作品です。最後の５秒に「黄金風景」を見た太宰の言葉が凝縮されています。
