Fast vergessen dagegen sind seine Erlebnisse als Kriegsreporter bei den preußischen Truppen. So wurde Fontane bei einer Reise 1870 durch das halb besetzte Frankreich verdächtigt, ein Spion zu sein, geriet in französische Kriegsgefangenschaft in Paris und wurde erst auf Intervention Bismarcks freigelassen. Anschaulich und facettenreich liest Matthias Ponnier aus den wenig bekannten Kriegstagebüchern des berühmten Romanciers.

Friedrich Hölderlin war ein Dichter, der um 1800 an der Enge seines Alltags zu ersticken glaubte. Die zweite Hälfte seines Lebens verbrachte Hölderlin allein in einem Turmzimmer in Tübingen - in geistiger Zerrüttung. Über hundert Jahre mussten vergehen, bis sein Talent erkannt wurde. Heute zählt Hölderlin zu den bedeutendsten Lyrikern der Literaturgeschichte. Das belegen auch seine Briefe - adressiert an Familie, Freunde und berühmte Zeitgenossen.
