Die keltische Herrscherin Boudica und ihre verbliebenen Krieger durchstreifen partisanengleich das Land. Macro und Cato mussten einen hohen Preis in der Schlacht zahlen, unzählige Legionäre sind gefallen, große Städte liegen in Trümmern. Für die beiden kampferprobten Heerführer ist klar: Es kann keinen Frieden geben, solange sie Boudica nicht bezwungen haben.

Gewaltige Schlachten im Schatten der Pyramiden. Der ehemalige Gladiator Ajax wurde aus Kreta vertrieben und macht nun Ägypten unsicher. Seine Überfälle auf Flottenstützpunkte und Handelsschiffe stellen eine Bedrohung für die Stabilität des römischen Imperiums dar, da sich seine Männer als Römer ausgeben und so den Hass der Bevölkerung auf die Besatzungsmacht schüren. Die beiden erprobten Kämpfer Cato und Macro werden von Ägyptens Statthalter damit beauftragt, sich der 22. Legion anzuschließen und Ajax zur Strecke zu bringen, bevor das Land endgültig verloren ist.

Die Feinde des Imperiums dürsten nach Rache. Die Krieger Macro und Cato sind auf dem Weg nach Rom, als ihr schwer beschädigtes Schiff vor Kreta anlegen muss. Dort tobt ein Aufstand - die Revolte unter der Führung des brutalen Gladiators Ajax droht die Mittelmeerinsel ins Chaos zu stürzen. Ajax steht dem römischen Reich mit unversöhnlichem Hass gegenüber, und auch gegen die beiden Centurionen hegt er tiefen Groll.

Syrien, die östliche Grenze des Römischen Reichs, wird von Unruhen erschüttert. Doch die römischen Truppen sind untergraben von Korruption und Disziplinlosigkeit. Die Centurionen Macro und Cato sollen die Schlagkraft der Kohorten wiederherstellen. Unterdessen sät der Stammesführer Bannus den Hass gegen Rom. Die Revolten nehmen immer bedrohlichere Ausmaße an.
