Siddhartha, the respected son of a Brahmin, is expected, by all who know him, to follow in the footsteps of his father. No matter what rituals and meditations Siddhartha undergoes, he is totally unsatisfied with self, rituals, and learning. Sidhhartha leaves his father's house and together with his close friend Govinda, he starts his journey to enlightenment. He starts his journey with the ascetics, and moves on to learn what Gotama can teach, finally discovering his path for himself.

While exploring the beach, four adventurous children make the acquaintance of a very odd creature: a sand fairy. When they have adapted to the brusque and forthright demeanor of the fairy, they discover that he has unusual powers, which he can be persuaded to demonstrate. As a result, the children enjoy many bizarre adventures, some of which are dangerous, but all of which are entertaining. Five Children and It is the first volume of a trilogy.

A man was hanged in Reading Gaol during Wilde's imprisonment there. In "The Ballad", written after his release, he tells of the horror of the event and its effect on himself and his fellow prisoners. First published 1898, under the pseudonym C.3.3 - the number by which Wilde was known in the prison, consisting of the cell block, landing number and cell number of his cell.

Betraying her own ideals, she has an affair, resulting in a child out of wedlock, and decides to raise the child on her own. Undset gives a gripping portrayal of a woman struggling towards fulfillment and independence, who at the same time wrestles with mental problems. It is written with unflinching honesty, which makes her story as compelling today as it was nearly a century ago.

This is the handwritten book that Carroll wrote for private use before being urged to develop it later into Alice in Wonderland. It was meant to entertain his family and friends. Jack London draws upon his own experiences of a long Klondike winter to tell the story of two men, complete opposites in almost every way, who break off from their gold-searching party to spend a long winter together in a remote cabin. Thinking it will be easier than pushing on further north with the rest of the party, they fight against the cold, dwindling supplies, endless days of complete darkness, encroaching madness, the ubiquitous "Fear of the North", and ultimately, each other.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, the English poet Francis Thompson (1859-1907) was a true mystic. While more celebrated poets, like Wordsworth, Tennyson, and Arnold, were content to express their religious leanings in traditional devotional formulae, Thompson strove to portray the divine directly, in all its terrifying majesty. In this way he is more akin to earlier masters, like Henry Vaughan and George Herbert, than to the poets of his own day.

The Cherry Orchard is Chekhov's final play, first performed in 1904 at the Moscow Art Theatre and directed by Konstantin Stanislavski. It takes place on the Ranevsky family's country estate, which boasts a large cherry orchard that is in bloom as the play opens. Spring Awakening (German: Frühlings Erwachen) was the first major play by Frank Wedekind.
