From August 7th 1942 until February 24th 1944, the US Navy fought the most difficult campaign in its history. On Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945, more than 184,000 US troops began landing on the only Japanese home soil invaded during the Pacific war. No other battle of the Second World War lasted longer than the 2,075 days of the Battle of the Atlantic.
