The third book in the series tells the amazing story of the most renowned bombers of World War II: America's B-17 - the "Flying Fortress" - and Britain's Lancaster Bomber. The B-17s of the "Mighty Eighth", with their unique, robust design, took flight across Europe in broad daylight, at the expense of horrific losses of men and aircraft. The star of the B-17 section was the Memphis Belle, the first UK-based B-17 to successfully complete 25 missions and return to the USA a true hero.

During the Second World War, Flt Lt Richard Stevens led an extraordinary campaign as an RAF nightfighter. When we remember the Second World War in the air, we think of fighter pilots and bomber crews. But what was it like for the men and women working as ground crew and in the aircraft factories who also played a crucial role in defeating Hitler? What was it like making history? What sense did these individuals have of what they were doing, either at the time or later? Did they feel they were caught up in the tide of great events? Or were they simply doing their demanding and often dangerous duty?

1951. The Cold War is heating up. With Soviet troops amassing across Eastern Europe, and the arrests of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg for spilling nuclear secrets, President Harry Truman assigned General Curtis LeMay the task of installing nuclear forces in Britain. For eighty-two years the Royal Flying Corps (RFC), which in 1918 became the Royal Air Force (RAF), maintained a permanent military aviation presence in the Far East. The first RFC units arrived in India in 1915. RAF India grew substantially in the interwar period and throughout World War Two.
