This is a comprehensive history of Portugal that covers the whole span, from the Stone Age to today. Não só porque a Europa toda parecia um barril de pólvora prestes a explodir: na Espanha, Hitler e Stalin mediram forças, comunismo e fascismo se enfrentaram, soldados voluntários originários de muitas nações foram ao país defender a causa republicana. Não é errado dizer que, além de ter sofrido uma sangrenta guerra civil, a Espanha foi palco do último ensaio antes da Segunda Guerra Mundial (1939-1945).

¿Otro libro sobre la guerra civil? Pues sí, otro, pero con una diferencia: no confunde con datos innecesarios y relata lo ocurrido en aquellos tres años de locura homicida sin catequizar sobre quiénes eran los buenos y quiénes eran los malos. No es una novela, porque todo lo que cuenta ocurrió (incluso las menudas historias que espantan o que mueven a risa), pero se oye como una novela y pretende instruir deleitando.

Stanley Edward Lane-Poole (1854 - 1931) was a British orientalist and archaeologist. The Moors in Spain is a comprehensive history about the Moorish conquest and rule of the Iberian Peninsula, until the Spanish took back the land. It includes chapters on the last Visigothic kingdom, El Cid, and the fall of Granada.

At one time, Spain was the center of Jewish life in Europe. Most European Jews were Spanish Jews. The most important scholars and yeshivas were there. But Spain turned against its Jews, who had been there for a 1,500 years or more, even before the Muslims and before the Christians.
