Poor Richard's Almanack contained the calendar, astronomical and astrological information, poems, and sayings. In the spaces that occurred between noted calendar days, Franklin included proverbial sentences about industry and frugality. Franklin also included the occasional mathematical exercise, and the 1750 Almanack features an early example of demographics. It is mainly remembered, however, for being a repository of Franklin's aphorisms and proverbs, many of which live on in American English.

Theodore Roosevelt Jr., (1858-1919), 26th president of the United States, from 1901 to 1909, was also a conservationist, naturalist, and writer. From 1884 to 1886, he established his ranch in Dakota Territory, which involved much hardship and toil. Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail - published in 1888 - is the account of his labors and adventures as a cowboy, hunter, herder, and even a stint as a deputy sheriff.

Fanny Kelly (1845-1904) was a North American pioneer captured by the Sioux and held captive for five months. Her ill-fated party was attacked by chief Ottawa on the Oregon Trail. She escaped when Sihasapa people took her to Fort Sully.

The Gunmen of the American Wild West Collection brings to life the history of the frontier west of the Mississippi in the latter parts of the 19th century. The gunmen ranged from lawmen to cowboys, ranchers, and outlaws. Most of the outlaws in the Old West preyed on banks, trains, and stagecoaches. Although spread thin, the law was present, usually on the level of deputy US marshal, county sheriff, and the town marshal or constable.

The diary of Sarah Raymond chronicles the family’s journey from Missouri to Virginia City, Montana Territory. Sarah notes each day's adventures - the accidents, illness, Indian encounters, mud, dust, boredom, and fear. Her journal was first published in a newspaper in the 1880s, and the book appeared in 1902.

On Sept. 28, 1870, the 4-year-old Thomas Stringfield was captured by a band of Comanches when they attacked the Stringfield family on their wagon in McMullen County. Thomas was given the name "Two Braids" and assimilated into the tribe of Comanches with whom he lived for 40 years. In 1911, he published Captured By the Apaches which covers his life as an Apache and his rediscovery of the white man’s world after four decades. Stringfield knew the famous Chiefs Geronimio and Quanah Parker, and wrote about religion, marriage, and other topics on Indian life.

The book is a history of the Western frontier at the end of the US Civil War. It covers the Sioux war that broke out in the Great Lakes region in detail, exploring the roots and results of the conflict.

Life and Times of Frederick Douglass covers the life of the prominent abolitionist during and after the Civil War. Here, Douglass provides a fuller account of his escape from slavery and the underground railway to freedom. Andy Adams (1859-1935) was born to pioneer parents in Indiana, worked in Texas for a decade driving cattle, and settled in Colorado Springs, where he penned his cowboy narratives. The Log of a Cowboy chronicles a five-month drive of three thousand head of cattle from Brownsville, Texas, to the Blackfoot Indian Reservation in Montana. This classical work of fiction provides fascinating insights of everyday life on the Great Western Cattle Trail with a team of 12 cowhands, a cook, a horse wrangler and a foreman.

The work comprises Villehardouin's "Conquest of Constantinople", which recounts the controversial Fourth Crusade, which descended into an attack on the Eastern Christians of Byzantium. In "Life of Saint Louis", Joinville draws on his friendship with King Louis IX of France to describe the campaigns in the Holy Land.

Two Years Before the Mast is an 1840 memoir by the author Richard Henry Dana. A Harvard graduate, he spent the years 1834 to 1836 as a sailor on a merchant ship on a voyage from Boston to California. The journey took them past Cape Horn on the Tierra del Fuego archipelago where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans meet. Dana provides detailed descriptions of ship life and the technical aspects of sailing. A chapter on California and its inhabitants offers valuable historical insights on the state which was then a foreign land.

The memoirs of Lieutenant-General James Longstreet contains much of historical interest. He provides a personal account of the progress of the Civil War, plus a wealth of anecdotes about Robert E Lee and his officers. Longstreet was the commander of the Confederate Army's First Corps, which fought through most of the major wartime campaigns.

One of the most studied and written about episodes in US history, the American Civil War remains the subject of cultural and historiographical debate. Frank Grouard was an army scout associated with many of the most notable events of the Indian Wars of the Great Plains. Grouard had lived among the Sioux for six years, first as a prisoner and later as a Sioux warrior. During this time he acquired an indepth knowledge of the Northwest. As a government scout, he served as an interpreter, performed despatches, and tracked war parties. Grouard was present at the battle of the Rosebud in 1876 where government forces were fought to a standstill by Crazy Horse.

Booker T. Washington’s 1901 autobiography can be read as a redemption story echoing many similar voices of its time. Starting from the humiliation he experienced as a slave, he ponders the meaning of identity in a situation that seeks to dehumanize. He furthers his story by expanding on his difficulties in obtaining an education and the need for change in our minds as well as societal structures.

James Wilson (1742-1798) was one of the founding fathers of the US and a signatory of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. A leading legal theorist, he was one of the six original justices appointed to the Supreme Court. In this work, he argues that man does not exist for the sake of government but that government exists for the sake of man.
