John Wycliffe was known as the “Morning Star” of the Reformation. His doctrines of strict adherence to the Bible and his attacks on the wealth and corruption of the Catholic Church would be the spark that would later ignite the fires of the Protestant Reformation.

Balthasar Gracián wurde am 8. Januar 1601 in Belmonte de Calatayud (Aragon) geboren. Mit 18 trat er in den Jesuitenorden in Tarragona ein und war nach Beendigung seiner Studien als Professor der Rhetorik, Metrik, Literatur, Philosophie und Theologie in ganz Spanien tätig. 1647 erschien sein »Handorakel und Kunst der Weltklugheit«, unter dem Pseudonym Lorenzo Gracián, zusammengestellt von Don Vincentio Juan de Lanstanosa. Diese Sammlung von 300 Weisheiten, Merksprüchen und praktischen Verhaltensregeln zählt zu den der berühmtesten Texte des 17. Jahrhunderts.
