For James Allen, philosopher and pioneer of the New Thought movement, the highest expression of personal realization was to be "in the world" but not "of the world." As Allen says, "The turmoil of the world we cannot avoid, but the disturbances of mind we can overcome." When a man enters a dark room, he is not sure of his movements; he cannot see objects around him or properly locate them and is liable to hurt himself by coming into sudden contact with them. But let a light be introduced, and immediately all confusion disappears. Every object is seen, and there is no danger of being hurt. To the majority, life is such a dark room, and their frequent hurts - their disappointments, perplexities, sorrows, and pains - are caused by sudden contact with principles that they do not see.

James Allen (1864-1912) was a philosopher and pioneer of the New Thought movement. A prolific author, his works have become a fundamental source for many of the concepts used today in motivational and self-help programs. The Mastery of Destiny is Allen's treatise on the apparent conflict between fate and free will. He states that there is a method by which these opposing forces can be reconciled.

In this work James Allen delineates the internal pilgrimage that commences with the cultivation of faith and courage and ends in knowledge and victory. In the words of the author: "Every being lives in his own mental world. His joys and sorrows are the creations of his own mind and are dependent upon the mind for their existence. In the midst of the world, darkened with many sins and sorrows, in which the majority live, there abides another world, lighted up with shining virtues and unpolluted joy, in which the perfect ones live."

Two themes that recur very frequently in the works of James Allen are passion and purity. However, unlike many writers on moral discipline, the author regards purity as the natural state of man, which has been obscured by passionate attachment to external artefacts. Once the waves of passion are stilled, attachment falls away, allowing the seeker to attain a transcendent purity of vision and thus behold the reality that underlies the illusion of change.

James Allen (1864-1912) was one of the pioneers of the New Thought movement, the primary aim of which was to fuse the principles of psychology, philosophy, and religion into a protocol that could be applied to everyday life.
