Hirsch is checking firearms. The regular police audit: all weapons secured, ammo stored separately, no unauthorised person with keys to the gun safe. He’s checking people, too. The drought is hitting hard in the mid-north, and Hirsch is responsible for the welfare of his scattered flock of battlers, bluebloods, loners and miscreants.

Hirsch's rural beat is wide. Daybreak to day's end, dirt roads and dust. Every problem that besets small towns and isolated properties, from unlicensed driving to arson. The victim is connected, and now DI Hal Challis is facing interference from on high. Then a bludgeoned corpse is found outside town, and it's clear something much darker than adolescent craziness is going down.

Hirsch muss die Gemüter beruhigen, doch als auch noch eine Leiche gefunden wird, überschlagen sich die Ereignisse.

Stundenlang patrouilliert Constable Hirschhausen über Highways und ausgewaschene Schotterstraßen durchs australische Hinterland. Nervosität liegt in der Luft, die Pandemie zehrt an den Nerven und an Hirschs Toleranzlevel. Auf der Suche nach einem vermissten Backpacker sieht sich Hirsch starrsinnigen Farmern gegenüber, als er zu einem vermeintlichen Brand gerufen wird: ein dilettantisch angezündeter Koffer im Straßengraben. Bis Hirsch die Leiche darin entdeckt.

Im Garten der Wrights auf der Blackberry Hill Farm gleitet eine Schlange über den verdorrten Rasen und unter eine verwitterte Betonplatte. Die aufgeschreckte Familie lässt den Schlangenfänger kommen, doch der buddelt etwas ganz anderes aus: Unter der Platte kommt ein Skelett zum Vorschein.
