The Sand-Man (German: Der Sandmann, 1816) is a short story written in German by E. T. A. Hoffmann. It was the first in an 1817 book of stories titled Die Nachtstücke (The Night Pieces). The story is told by a narrator who claims to have known Lothar. It begins by quoting three letters.

Der junge Baron Siegfried entdeckt das Glücksspiel für sich. Er trifft auf einen geheimnisvollen Fremden, der ihm die Geschichte des Chevalier Menars erzählt – eines leidenschaftlichen Kartenspielers, der zunächst vom Glück begünstigt wird, dann jedoch alles verliert. Chevalier Menars verfällt der Spielsucht, entfremdet sich von seiner Umgebung und verliert nicht nur sein Vermögen, sondern auch seine Würde.

E. T. A. Hoffmann beherrschte alle Spielarten der romantischen Literatur. Seine Erzählungen kreisten vor allem immer wieder um das Unbewusste und das Fantastische, aber auch um die Verlockungen und Gefahren der Künstlerexistenz. So legt der Matrose Elis in "Die Bergwerke zu Falun" seine bürgerliche Existenz ab und folgt dem Ruf der Bergkönigin. In "Ritter Gluck" dagegen wird der Erzähler durch einen Sonderling in das wahre Reich der Musik geführt und in "Rat Krespel" verbietet eben dieser Rat seiner geliebten Tochter das Singen, da sie daran sterben würde.

E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) was a German Romantic author of fantasy and horror as well as a jurist, composer, music critic, draftsman and caricaturist. His stories were highly influential during the 19th century, and he is one of the major authors of the Romantic movement. This audiobook includes three short stories: 'The Mines of Falun', 'Gambler's Luck' and 'The Cremona Violin'.

'Gambler's Luck' tells the story of a young German baron who is enjoying a streak of beginner's luck at the gambling tables. As his winnings mount up, the young man is gradually becoming sucked into the addictive habit of gambling. One night a stranger appears at the gambling table and watches the baron intently. The stranger appears night after night, until the baron is infuriated and challenges the man. A later chance meeting between the two results in the stranger relating a most unusual and gripping tale....
