About this listen

Running is the one thing that we all like talking about. Every week on the award winning Women’s Running podcast, we talk all things running, women, health and fitness with our own brand of happy, irreverent chat. Esther and Holly talk through their training highs and lows, and all the bits and pieces in-between. Every so often, we invite an expert to join us to help us figure out the confusing worlds of training, recovery, nutrition, health and more. And sometimes we get to talk to an incredible woman from the world of running, from Anna McNuff to Paula Radcliffe, Susie Chan to Nicky Spinks. So why do we do it? Because we realised that most of the running podcasts we listened to were full of blokes waffling on about quads and cadence (and we realised that we can do that perfectly well ourselves, thank you very much). Right here, we talk about all the things that affect us when we step out the door: sexism, hormones, menopause, food, pelvic floors, relationships, mental health, seagull attacks and wild weeing. But. BUT. We will also talk about races, PBs, shoes, training, starting running, enjoying running, finding the fun. And quads and cadence. This is the Women’s Running podcast, and it’s for women who love to run.

  • Ep 261. Naked saunas and running complaints
    Aug 7 2025

Welcome to episode 261 of the Women’s Running podcast. I’m your host Esther Newman and she’s your other host Holly Taylor. On this podcast we talk about health, politics, stuff on TV and what we ate last night. Occasionally, we talk about running.

    Holly strips off

We start with some hot service station chat, and also some controversial service station chat. But then we quickly move on to the highlight of Holly’s holiday (that’s hard to say) in Berlin, which is something she would always do, but something I would never do. I’ll leave you to guess what it is.

    Wetsuit wonders

We talk about my Cornish holiday and my new wetsuit. If you fancy finding wetsuits a joy rather than a trauma, then check out the range at Orca. Mine is a beautiful orange thing and I love it more than my children.

    Running as escape

We do eventually get around to running – we’ve both been doing a bit of escapism on our holidays, which I thoroughly recommend. But even though I’ve been escaping, I’ve still got a lot to complain about. Don’t cancel us just because I’m horrible about pretty much everyone, I think it’s hormonal.

  • Ep 260. Cover star Renee McGregor on fuelling, RED-S, menopause & weight
    Jul 31 2025

Welcome to episode 260 of the Women’s Running podcast. I’m your host Esther Newman and she’s your other host Holly Taylor. On this podcast we talk about health, politics, stuff on TV and what we ate last night. Occasionally, we talk about running.

    Cover star Renee

In this episode we’re joined by Renee McGregor, who as well as many other amazing things, is our August cover star – make sure you pick up a copy of Women’s Running from all good shops now to read our interview with her. Renee is a world renowned sport nutritionist and eating disorder specialist, she’s an ultra runner and a trustee of Black Trail Runners. Author of Fuel for Thought.

    Perimenopause and weightloss jabs

We chat to her about some of the themes we were talking about a few weeks ago: about how runners can fuel themselves well, warning signs to look out for in terms of getting the balance between training and fuelling right, and the complexity of figuring this out when you’re going through perimenopause. We also touch on how things have changed for women; how society influences our view of ourselves and our shapes, and the impact of weightloss jabs. It’s one of those must-listen episodes.

  • Ep 259. When is a marathon not a marathon?
    Jul 24 2025

Welcome to episode 259 of the Women’s Running podcast. I’m your host Esther Newman and she’s your other host Holly Taylor. On this podcast we talk about health, politics, stuff on TV and what we ate last night. Occasionally, we talk about running.

    Running and heat

Today we’re talking about how we’re managing our running in the recent heatwave at the beginning of July. And we have *some* resolution to the – I’m sure by now – extremely dull London Marathon chat.

    Live pod

We need to remind you at this point that if you’re up for running the Bath Half with us in March next year, do please sign up, because if you do, you can then come and join us at our live event the night before, which will be filled with fun and giggles and perhaps a few tips on how to survive the Half the following day. Make sure you pick up your tickets to come and see us (they’re only a tenner) from Eventbrite. Google Women’s Running Bath Half event if the link doesn’t work!

    Controversies

I also bring up a controversy – tell us what you think about marathons having time penalties if they’ve got lots of downhill! Then we get on to PE at school – what are your experiences, what do you think of the PE provision we have these days for kids?
