Israel has commenced a final assault on Gaza City- a discussion with Egyptian journalist Karim el-Gawhary- they also describe the announcement of an expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which many see as the end of any two state solution to the area. From FRANCE- I lost the first part of a report by Israeli reporter Noga Tamopolsky about massive protests in across Israel against Netanyahu and the continuing war on Palestine. Netanyahu accused French President Macron and Australian PM Albanese of being anti-Semites by saying they will join the countries who support Palestinian statehood. The Taliban interim government in Afghanistan says it wants to end its international isolation- Russia has recognized their rule and the Taliban hope to extend economic cooperation with more countries including Japan. From CUBA- El Salvador will extend pretrial detention for 80,000 gang suspects for 2 more years without trials. In a recent Presidential election in Bolivia, 2 right-wing candidates garnered the most votes and will have a runoff election soon. Wednesday was the 80th anniversary of the US dropping an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, killing 140,000 people within a year. US Space Agency NASA will fast track efforts to build a nuclear power plant on the moon- China and Russia have a joint plan to build one there later. South Korea and the US are postponing military drills allegedly because of high temperatures. Israeli media say that Netanyahu plans to completely occupy the Gaza Strip because of Hamas. From FRANCE- Arwa Damon, founder of International Network of Aid, Relief, and Assistance, is interviewed following Netanyahu announcing commercial aid might be allowed to enter Gaza- she describes the scale of the starvation and the flow of aid actually needed. She says only the US has the capacity to influence Netanyahu. The UN Environmental Program is hosting a summit attempting to create a treaty to combat plastic pollution. An interview with Professor Bethanie Carney Almroth on the severity of the problem with plastic pollution and the human health risks that are manifesting now. Recent research from the University of London, led by Professor Michael Spagat, says the Hamas figures are short by 40%, meaning that the current death toll of Gazans is 100,000, or 4% of the entire population. Britain and France have agreed to coordinate their nuclear weapons without US involvement. This pact, known as the Northwood Declaration, is discussed by Scottish Professor Phillips O’Brien- he describes the pact as a decoupling from the US without saying it. A new law banning children under 16 from using social media in Australia comes into effect in December. From CUBA- 30 countries are meeting at a summit in Colombia to find a way to stop the war on Gaza- the collection of countries is called the Hague Group and were addressed by Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur for Occupied Palestine. Human caused climate change made Europe up to 4 degrees Celsius last week which researchers say resulted in an additional 2500 deaths from the heatwave. From GERMANY- Israeli PM Netanyahu is promoting his vision for Gaza which involves relocating all civilians out of the territory- this could be considered a crime against humanity and a war crime. The defense minister has proposed a so-called humanitarian city in Rafah, where all Gazans would be placed with no exit. Several experts discuss the prospects including Rene Wildangel, a former policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations. From CUBA- In the UK belonging to or supporting a group called Palestine Action has become a terror crime, 29 citizens were arrested last weekend for holding signs supporting the group. From GERMANY- Following an Israeli attack on a seaside cafe in Gaza that killed 30 civilians including another journalist, DW interviewed Martin Roux from Reporters Without Borders. They discuss this cafe incident as well as the unprecedented killing of 200 journalists by the Israeli army in its war on Gaza since October 2023. Journalists in war zones are protected under international law, and targeting them is a war crime. From JAPAN- Trump has expressed frustration in trade talks with Japan- Japan is also frustrated and this report expresses the view from Japan. It also includes some history of the tariff conflict between the massive business partners. Zelensky wants to pull Ukraine from the Ottawa Convention which bans anti-personnel land mines- recently Poland and Finland said they are withdrawing from the treaty as well. Ukraine carried out a drone strike on a Russian factory 800 miles across the border. From CUBA- Venezuela reported an international conspiracy bringing weapons across their borders to destabilize the country and justify a US intervention. No one is sure if the International Criminal Court will survive the Trump administration pressure on Gaza.
