• Dear Parent: How We Accidentally Removed Friction From Our Gen Z's Life ,,,Helicopter Parenting, Snow Plow and Reintroducing Healthy Friction!
    Mar 10 2026

Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast!! If you're new here, my name is Stephanie Buckley. I'm a solution-focused therapist, parenting strategist, and family systems coach who specializes in ADHD, executive functioning challenges, emotional regulation, and the patterns that can leave families feeling stuck in cycles of conflict, avoidance, and frustration.

Solution-focused therapy is an approach within psychology that emphasizes building practical solutions rather than remaining stuck analyzing problems indefinitely. In solution-focused work, we look at what is already working in a family system, even in small ways, and build from those strengths to create forward momentum. The goal is not to stay focused on what went wrong in the past but to identify strategies that help families move toward stability and growth today.

In this episode, we explore the "Friction Gap" the distance between modern parenting's desire to protect and the young adult's need for struggle to build resilience. We dive into the neurobiology of avoidance and how families can transition from "over-functioning" to a "consultant" model to help young adults successfully launch.

    Key Concepts & Definitions
    • Healthy Friction: The manageable obstacles and responsibilities that bridge the gap between being a novice and becoming competent.

    • Over-Accommodation: Removing challenges that a child is actually capable of handling, which unintentionally stunts their sense of self-efficacy.

    • The Lawnmower/Snowplow Parent: A parenting style that "clears the path" for the child, removing obstacles before they are even encountered.

    • Differentiation of Self (Bowen Theory): The ability to stay emotionally connected to your child while remaining a separate individual who doesn't "take on" their anxiety or panic.

    • Neuroplasticity: The brain's ability to rewire itself through "successful struggle." Staying in a hard job builds a "workplace callous" that reduces the urge to quit.

    The "Evolution of Rescuing" Timeline
    • Childhood: Intervening in playdates, packing bags, and "shielding" from social exclusion.

    • Adolescence: Calling teachers to fix grades, acting as a human alarm clock, and providing "unlimited" financial cushions.

    • Young Adulthood: Writing resumes, calling bosses on the child's behalf, and allowing a responsibility-free lifestyle at home.

  • Dear Parents: Do You Know Why ADHD Kids Melt Down At Home but Hold It Together At School….Parenting Strategies That Actually Work!!
    Mar 5 2026

Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast. If you're new here, my name is Stephanie Buckley. I'm a Parenting Strategist and Family Systems Coach who specializes in ADHD, executive functioning challenges, emotional regulation, and the patterns that keep families stuck in the same arguments on repeat. Many ADHD children hold it together all day at school and then melt down when they get home. This episode explains the neuroscience behind after-school dysregulation and introduces a practical After-School Reset System that helps stabilize the brain and nervous system. Parents will learn how protein snacks like Orgain protein drinks, Chomps beef sticks, string cheese, and apples with peanut butter can help regulate blood sugar, why hydration supports emotional regulation, and how movement such as jumping on a mini trampoline, doing jumping jacks, jumping rope, running short sprints, going for a walk, or playing tag helps ADHD brains release pent-up energy. The episode also explains why screen time after school can create a synthetic dopamine spike followed by a crash, and why calm hands-on activities such as listening to music or working on STEM kits like KiwiCo are healthier decompression tools. When families consistently follow the sequence of protein, water, movement, and non-screen decompression, many children transition into homework and evening routines with far fewer meltdowns.

  • Dear Parents, Accepting Your Child's Resignation Letter As CEO!!
    Feb 18 2026

Show Notes: The CEO Resignation Follow Up

Title: Accepting the Resignation: Taking the Keys Back

Host: Stephanie Buckley, AMFT, ADHD Parenting Strategist & Family Systems Coach

    Episode Summary

In the second installment of the "Dear Parent" series, Stephanie Buckley provides the formal response to the child's "resignation" from Episode 1. This episode features the Parents' Acceptance Speech a powerful script designed to help you and your partner reclaim the "Executive Suite" of your home. Stephanie explains why returning a child to their rightful role is a restorative act of love that stabilizes the entire family system.

    Key Takeaways

    • The Parents' Acceptance Speech: A definitive script for Mom and Dad to establish a unified, sturdy front and take back the "final say."
    • Structural Restoration: Why a clear hierarchy is not about dominance, but about creating the systemic harmony necessary for a family to thrive.
    • The 4 Restoration Shifts:
      1. The Protected Passenger: Shifting from hyper-vigilance to felt-safety.
      2. The Creative Director: Moving from manipulation (managing adults) to mastery (age-appropriate skills).
      3. The Learner-in-Training: Shifting from the pressure of performance to the freedom of trial and error.
      4. The Regulated Nervous System: Moving from cortisol-driven chaos to adult-led containment.
    • The "Ceiling" Concept: How being a sturdy leader allows your child the freedom to be "messy" and "small" because they trust you won't break.
    • ADHD & Executive Function: Why neurodivergent children need you to be their "External Executive Function" to succeed in the real world.

The "New Job Description" for the Child

    • Role: The Learner / Explorer / Protected Member.
    • Mandate: Growth, play, and age-appropriate contribution.
    • Benefit: The removal of adult-level weight, allowing for secure attachment and nervous system regulation.

  • Overfunctioning & Underfunctioning: The Dance Every ADHD Household Falls Into
    Dec 10 2025
The Path To Peace Therapy Podcast Hosted by Stephanie Buckley, AMFT Solution Focused Parenting Strategist & Family Systems Coachr In this episode, Stephanie explores one of the most influential and least understood dynamics inside families navigating ADHD: the overfunctioning/underfunctioning cycle. When one member of the household steps in too much and another steps back too far, the entire family system reorganizes around patterns of survival rather than development. Drawing on clinical expertise, family-systems theory, and decades of lived experience raising a thriving neurodivergent son, Stephanie breaks down how these roles form, why they intensify in ADHD households, and what it takes to rebalance them. This conversation will empower parents, partners, and young adults to understand the unspoken forces shaping their relationships and how to shift into healthier patterns that allow everyone to grow. This episode now includes an important segment on how this dynamic impacts siblings without ADHD, offering clarity parents often don't realize they need. What You'll Learn in This Episode • Why overfunctioning and underfunctioning develop in overwhelmed families • How ADHD amplifies both roles inside the household • The emotional and psychological cost to children who underfunction • The invisible burnout carried by the parent who overfunctions • Real examples of how the dynamic appears during routines, homework, dysregulation, and marriage • The long-term developmental risks for young adults raised in these patterns • The essential steps to begin rebalancing the system • How siblings without ADHD adapt by disappearing, overachieving, or becoming resentful • Why rebalancing the system helps every child in the home Key Concepts Discussed • Overfunctioning • Underfunctioning • Family-systems regulation • Executive functioning challenges • Shame-driven avoidance • Emotional resilience • Parent–child role reversal • Sibling role formation in ADHD households Powerful Takeaways "Overfunctioning and underfunctioning aren't personality flaws. They are survival roles that develop when stress exceeds capacity." "Young adults don't become avoidant or anxious by accident they become that way because of the roles they practiced inside the family system." "When the overfunctioning parent begins to step back, and the underfunctioning child begins to step forward, the entire family shifts from survival into development."
