About this listen

I interview adventure athletes, artists, yogis, and the person next door. I'm fascinated by how people choose and commit to their passions. I find the stories of how individuals just like you and me have devoted themselves to their practices and the challenges they have met along the way incredibly inspiring. I believe we can gain insight for our own practice and habits by listening to others' stories. I love sharing these conversations of how people connect with, and commit to, what lights them up.Copyright 2026 Angela Houghton Hygiene & Healthy Living Psychology Psychology & Mental Health Social Sciences Spirituality

  • Sophia Walters: Living Lucky Between the Tides and the Clouds
    Mar 25 2026

Sophia Walters lives in Moab, Utah with her husband and dog. In this conversation, we talk about Sophia's practice of rowing. I learned in our conversation that Sophia is a world record holder for crossing the Pacific Ocean with a team of three other women from California to Hawaii. She is currently training to participate in The World's Toughest Row, a 3000 mile race.

Sophia is an open ocean rower living in the desert southwest. Outside of her training, she has embraced living in Moab by learning how to mountain bike and dirt bike. She is tickled by how small amounts of riding consistently have added up over a short amount of time. As her confidence and skills improve on the bike, she is having even more fun.

Sophia also shares her years of training experience through coaching where she believes you can be gentle with yourself and still progress.

Books that Sophia and I talked about:

    1. What If by Jason Caldwell
    2. Run With the Wind by Shion Miura
    3. Rowing to Latitude by Jill Fredston
