• Before Changing Millions of Minds She Had to Survive Her Own (Part 1 with Blair Imani)
    May 12 2025
Before Blair Imani became a global force for truth, inclusion, and education she was a young girl silently battling to make sense of a world that told her she didn’t belong. Raised Baptist in the American South, and later converting to Islam as a young adult, Blair’s path through identity, mental health, and cultural dissonance isn’t just powerful it’s necessary listening. In this exclusive Mental Health Awareness Month feature, Mind Amendment host Patrick Custer sits down with Blair to uncover the untold story behind her public brilliance the chapter that came before the platform. This is the raw, foundational truth behind her work that’s moved millions. In Part 1 of this three-part series, Blair reveals: - The early identity-shaping messages she absorbed from religion, family, and pop culture during the “girl power” era of the late ’90s and early 2000s - How mental health struggles including self-harm, suicidal ideation, and institutionalization were shaped by the pressure to perform safety in unsafe systems - The artistic and emotional lifelines that kept her afloat when language and labels failed her The quiet rage of feeling unseen, and the deep healing that came from embracing every part of herself out loud - How intersectionality impacts emotional regulation and why identity cannot be separated from mental health She also opens up about the complexity of friendships while healing, the cost of being the “educator” before fully healing yourself, and the liberating joy of no longer asking for permission to be whole. Why This Episode Matters: This is not the kind of story you’ll find in a campaign ad or a surface-level panel on wellness. It’s the real mental health work: the kind that happens in silence, in rage, in hospital beds, in late-night journals, and in the brave decision to keep living. Listener Challenge: Pick one thing to look forward to this week and don’t miss Part 2 of this transformative series next week with Blair Imani! __________________ Follow/Watch/Listen/Subscribe: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mindamendment/ YouTube: @mindamendment Facebook: @mindamendment Website: https://www.mindamendment.com __________________ Get Help: Promises Behavioral Health – mental health, trauma & addiction treatment Insta: https://www.instagram.com/promises_bh/ Website: https://www.promisesbehavioralhealth.com __________________ Cast: Patrick Custer - Host Insta: https://www.instagram.com/thepatrickcuster/ Tiktok: @thepatrickcuster YouTube: @thepatrickcuster Facebook: @thepatrickcuster Blair Imani - Guest Website: https://www.blairimani.com/ Insta:@blairimani Tiktok: @blairimani YouTube: @blairimani Facebook: @blairimani __________________ About Blair Imani: Blair Imani is the creator of the viral web series, Smarter In Seconds, LA Times bestselling author of Read This to Get Smarter, and co-host of the podcast Thoughts About Feelings. • Therapy Trap: Why Chasing the "Feel Better" Is Not Healing (Part 4 with Trish Caldwell)
    Apr 28 2025

Most people don’t relapse because they’re weak they relapse because the system is broken. In this eye-opening finale with Trish Caldwell, we dismantle the outdated practices still plaguing mental and physical healthcare today. From rushed trauma processing to therapy models designed for the wrong population, Trish breaks down how ego, convenience, and old training can sabotage true healing. Whether you're a clinician, patient, or loved one this conversation forces all of us to confront the uncomfortable truth: most treatment plans are designed to feel good, not to work. They're simply coming from an outdated approach that needs to evolve. But there's another way. Trish shares how measured-based care, proper pacing, and skill-building can change the future of recovery. You'll hear powerful metaphors (like why healing is like training for a marathon in flip-flops) and bold insights that challenge everything we’ve accepted about mental health, trauma recovery, and treatment outcomes. If you’ve ever felt like you or someone you care about “failed” in treatment this episode is your permission slip to question the system, not yourself.

    - To the professionals: What will you change in your practice today?

    - To the self-healers: What’s your next step in recognizing, regulating, and responding differently?

    - To the skeptics: What if everything you believed about healing... is wrong?

This is your mind. This is your moment. What will you do with it?

  • The Solution Is Before The Crisis (Part 3 with Trish Caldwell)
    Apr 21 2025

"The solution isn’t what you reach for in the crisis it’s what you’ve built long before it." In Part 3 of this eye-opening series with Trish Caldwell, Mind Amendment host Patrick Custer digs deeper into why healing often feels elusive even when we “know what to do.” Trish flips the script on the traditional view of coping skills like deep breathing or journaling as emergency tools. Instead, she argues that these practices only work when they’ve been integrated consistently into daily life, expanding our emotional tolerance long before a trigger ever shows up. This conversation explores how to identify your personal "tells" the subtle signs that you (or your clients) are already in a vulnerable, dysregulated state. Trish shares why the key to real healing is recognizing these moments of susceptibility and shifting the focus from reacting in crisis to preventing it through proactive self-regulation. Get ready for a powerful reframing of what emotional healing really looks like and why it starts way earlier than most of us think.
