• #22: The Shocking Truth About Adult Children and Addiction: What’s Causing It and How You Can Prevent It
    May 10 2025

What if the reason your adult child is always in their room… is because they’re hiding something? You have your suspicions—but they’re so disconnected and so secretive, that you’re no longer sure what’s real. You’ve got a hunch (love that parenting instinct) but they’ve gotten so good at making you feel bad for even questioning them, you’re riddled with self-doubt. Yet the facts are clear; they spend hours behind that door, you’re barely allowed in, they’re not themselves and something is very wrong. But who can you turn to, especially when everyone else’s adult kid seems to be okay? I can assure you that after listening to this episode, you’ll have a much better idea of what you can do to help.

But just so we’re on the same page – in case you think your adult kid is just going through a stage and “whatever it is”, will pass, you’re fooling yourself. Addiction is so much worse than what we think. It’s not just excessive alcohol or smoking too much weed – as if that isn’t bad enough. It’s ANY behavior that is getting in the way of your adult child’s life. In fact addiction has gotten so bad, that it’s actually an epidemic. So you can stop feeling like it’s just happening to your kid.

Before you jump into the episode, or maybe you’re not even sure if its for you, I want to share how extensive this problem is. Addictive behaviours could be anything from video gaming, social media scrolling, vaping, binge-watching YouTube or Netflix, gambling, online shopping, overeating, pornography – as well as alcohol and drugs. Many are hard to detect but all are hard to admit.

The worst part is this; these are not habits that will go away on their own — they require either intervention or a complete lifestyle change. Do not feel overwhelmed (too late for that Shari). I understand how difficult this is, and I truly believe you can help, once you know what to do.

Because I’ll be honest - here comes the NO BS Parenting tip - to just “let them” keep hiding in their room, staying addicted and continuing to be disconnected from life, is going to do more harm than good.

So instead of doing that, listen to this episode first because I’m about to share the shocking truth about the underlying cause of your adult child’s addiction and (drum roll please) that you CAN make a difference by not letting them sit there, alone in their room, wasting their life away. 💪

Please share this episode with someone who needs to hear it. 💞

  • #21: The Parenting Shift from Coach to Advisor: How to Communicate with Your Adult Child to Build a Lifelong Friendship
    May 2 2025

Want a better relationship with your adult child? Start by changing the way you communicate.

In this episode of LAUNCH, I talk with Toby Slough and his daughter Bailey Garner about the crucial transition every parent needs to make; going from Coach to Advisor. Chock full of eye-opening insights, practical tips, and real talk, I'm sure you'll find this conversation both helpful and heartfelt. (You might want to grab a tissue.)

Here's the problem we’re addressing today; if you're still trying to communicate with your adult child the same way you did when they were younger—and your relationship is not developing into a respectful and meaningful friendship—it’s about time you change your approach and your mindset.

In this powerful conversation, we share our parenting wisdom of what it looks like to shift from being the COACH your child has relied on to the ADVISOR they want to turn to. We talk about the importance of knowing when to step back, how to communicate without controlling, and why this shift is essential to strengthening your relationship as they grow into adulthood.

When you change how you communicate, you open the door to a lifelong friendship with your adult child. Are you ready?

    About my Guests:

Toby Slough is a pastor, author, and mental health advocate with over 35 years of ministry experience. After personally battling anxiety and panic disorder, Toby felt called to create spaces of emotional healing and is now the Legacy Pastor of Cross Timbers Church in Texas. Toby and his wife Mika are also the founders of BeAGoby.com, a faith-based platform dedicated to providing tools to local churches and resources to families, with a focus on helping parents and adult children to live emotionally healthier lives.

Their daughter, Bailey Garner, is the Director of Key Relationships at Goby Ministries, where she works closely with churches, schools, and families—coordinating events, building meaningful partnerships, and helping the family to share their message.

Before we jump in, just a quick heads-up; I apologize in advance for the sound quality on my end—something went a little sideways in the recording process and I sound a bit wonkey. But don’t worry—this conversation is very insightful, and so worth listening to.

  • #17: How Your Trauma Affects Your Children and What You Can Do to Break the Cycle
    Mar 22 2025

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself how your own childhood is showing up in your parenting ?

In this episode, we're having an honest conversation about something many parents never pause to consider: the lingering effects of your own unhealed childhood trauma—and how it can quietly impact your relationship with your child, no matter how old they are.

You’ll learn what trauma really looks like (and it shows up in different ways), how to recognize it in yourself, in the way you were parented, and how those unresolved patterns can unintentionally shape your child, and impact your relationship. Even if you love your kids deeply, trauma that goes unacknowledged can lead to distance, miscommunication, and negative cycles that repeat across generations.

We’ll talk about the subtle ways these patterns show up and more importantly, we’ll cover what it takes to break that cycle and start showing up differently—as the emotionally stable parent your child can trust and connect with.

Because let’s be honest—parenting doesn’t end at 18. Your child still needs you. To be strong. To be steady. And to support them, with love and self-awareness, till your very last breath.

You have the power to change the legacy. It’s never too late to become the parent your child deserves.

  • #16: Parental Estrangement: When Your Adult Child Goes No Contact - An Estranged Parent Shares Her Personal Story
    Mar 15 2025

For anyone who prefers watching interviews, you'll find it on Shari's youtube channel: Click here: https://youtu.be/TG35c5LsKtA?si=wYiBzElWmTdAicXw

Few things are more painful than Parental Estrangement—when your adult child intentionally limits or cuts off contact, leaving you heartbroken, confused, and searching for answers. The silence is deafening, the questions feel endless, and the pain can be unbearable. Why does this happen? Can the relationship be repaired? And if not, how do you cope and move forward?

Parental estrangement occurs when an adult child chooses to have no contact with their parent. This decision is often rooted in unresolved conflicts, emotional pain, and their need for boundaries and healing.

Estrangement can be temporary or permanent and may involve silence, avoidance, or rejection of attempts to reconnect. For parents, it can be an overwhelming experience, leading to feelings of grief, guilt, and confusion. While reconciliation is sometimes possible, healing often begins with self-reflection, taking accountability, and focusing on personal growth.

In this deeply personal and fully transparent episode, I sit down with Crystal Allon, a mother who has experienced estrangement firsthand. Now, she offers support and guidance to other parents facing the same pain, helping them navigate their emotions and work towards transformation through self-awareness.

    We explore:
🔹 Why adult children choose to go no contact
    🔹
How to shift from grief and confusion to self-reflection and healing
    🔹
How to find peace, even if reconciliation isn’t an immediate option
    🔹
The role and impact of Generational Trauma
    🔹
How to approach this if you are a Grandparent

If you or someone you know is struggling with parental estrangement, this episode offers insight, encouragement, and suggestions to help you move forward.
