• E58- Ideal Support for Husband and Wife Navigating Betrayal Trauma w/ Casey Allison
    Apr 10 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

Steve O’Connor hosts special guest Casey Allison, founder of Come Awake Coaching and Consulting.

Casey is a Master Certified Coach through ICF, an APSATS-certified Partner Coach, a Certified Disclosure Guide through Kintsugi Recovery Partners, a PSAP through IITAP, and a Brainspotting practitioner. She also has training in the perinatal period with betrayed women, and additional training to support partners of sex addicts who have criminally sexually offended, whether they’ve been charged or not. She holds many other trainings and certifications as well.

Casey shares how discovering her husband’s secret sexual life led her, after years of ineffective help and multiple practitioners, to find betrayal-trauma-informed support and eventually serve women navigating betrayal, pregnancy/new motherhood, and cases involving sexual offending. They discuss how uninformed resources can harm partners by blaming them, and share indicators of good support: prioritizing safety and stabilization, validating grief and anger, and aiming for post-traumatic growth rather than “going back.”

They emphasize the importance of truth and a collaborative Full Disclosure, including the Partner Impact Statement and Emotional Restitution letter, to restore mutuality, reduce shame, and foster empathy.

Casey shares about her Catholic women’s Facebook group and her coaching groups, and offers hope that healing is possible. Tune in and share!

  • E56- Catholic ASAT-C Joshua Urrutia | Facing the Self: Overcoming Shame and Intimacy Disorder
    Mar 17 2026

    Send a text

What happens when the very thing you're most ashamed of is also the thing keeping you from the love you most desperately need? In this episode, we sit down with Joshua Urrutia, MS, LPC-Associate and ASAT Candidate, to talk about one of the most painful paradoxes at the heart of sexual addiction: the war between deep shame and the longing to be truly known, seen and loved. At the root of that war, more often than not, is an attachment wound that has never been named, never been healed, and has been quietly running the show for years.

Joshua brings both clinical expertise and personal experience to this conversation. He shares what he witnessed during his time in ministry and mission work, and how those experiences led him to specialize in compulsive sexual behavior. This is an honest, grounded, and hope-filled conversation for anyone in recovery, anyone loving someone in recovery, or anyone who has ever felt too broken to be seen.

    In this episode we cover:

    • Joshua's personal journey and why he became a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist
    • What intimacy disorder actually means and what it looks like in real life
    • How early attachment wounds and attachment injuries lay the groundwork for compulsive sexual behavior later in life
    • The painful cycle of shame, hiding, and compulsive behavior and why it is really a distorted scream for connection
    • Why healing requires the opposite and what you can do to start healing

A note on attachment: You may hear the terms attachment theory and attachment injury in this conversation. Attachment theory, developed by psychiatrist John Bowlby, describes the deep human need for safe, reliable emotional bonds. First with caregivers, and later in adult relationships. When those bonds are broken, neglected, or never formed, an attachment injury occurs a: wound in the person's ability to trust, connect, and feel safe being truly known by another. For many men and women struggling with sexual addiction, compulsive behavior is not primarily about sex. It is about an unmet, often unconscious need for closeness and comfort that was rarely safely available. And for the betrayed spouse, the discovery of her partner's secret life is one of the most devastating attachment injuries an adult can experience: a rupture at the deepest level of relational trust.

About Joshua: Joshua Urrutia is a Licensed Professional Associate Counselor and ASAT Candidate (on his way to a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist) with Intuitus Group in the Austin area in Texas. He holds a Master's in Counseling from Divine Mercy University, is EMDR trained.

  • E55- Understanding Process Addiction: Why How You Cope Matters as Much as What You Use
    Feb 25 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

In This Episode: Steve breaks down what process addiction actually is, why understanding it matters so much, 7 common mistakes that keep people stuck, and the tools that actually work including one most people completely underestimate.

    What's covered:

    • What process addiction is and how it's different from what most people think addiction means
    • The neuroscience behind why behaviors can be just as addictive as substances
    • Why "just stop" has never worked and the leaky roof and bucket that explains it perfectly
    • 7 common mistakes people make in recovery
    • The tools that create real, lasting change
    • Why processing your emotions isn't optional and what happens when you don't

    The 7 Mistakes We Cover

    1. White-knuckling it alone
    2. Removing the behavior without replacing the function
    3. Not addressing the underlying issues
    4. All-or-nothing thinking after a slip
    5. Focusing only on stopping, not building a life worth living
    6. Not getting professional help when you need it
    7. Not building your support network before you need it

    The Tools We Cover

    • Phone calls — daily, multiple times a day, before crisis hits
    • Journaling — finding patterns, slowing the urge cycle, writing through triggers in real time
    • Physical movement — releasing what the body is holding
    • Mindfulness/Present Moment/Awareness — learning to float through a wave without being destroyed by it
    • Therapy/Coaching — translating what's underground into something you can actually work with
    • Creative outlets — the healing power of creation vs. consumption
    • Routine and structure — and the BLAST principle
    • Opposite action — doing the counterintuitive thing that actually pulls you out

    Key Takeaways

    • Process addiction is real. It is not a character flaw or a willpower problem. It follows the same neural pathways as substance addiction.
    • The behavior is a signal. Finding the fracture beneath the pain is where real recovery begins.
    • You cannot willpower your way out of a process addiction. But you can connect your way through it.
    • Every phone call, every journal entry, every honest conversation is building a new path through the forest. The more you take it, the clearer it gets.
    • Recovery isn't just about what you're stopping. It's about what you're building.

  • E54: Removing Your Shame Label with Dr. Eddie Capparucci
    Feb 11 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

Welcome back Dr. Eddie Capparucci as we dive deep into his first book "Removing Your Shame Label: Learning to Embrace God's Love When You Don't Like Yourself." This episode explores why shame, not just the behavior itself, is the primary barrier keeping men trapped in problematic sexual behavior and addiction.

We dive into the first several chapters of the book and Steve asks Dr. Capparucci questions to dive into each chapter. Tune in as we talk about understanding how God sees us and removing your shame label. I highly recommend reading this book if you struggle with shame.

We open with the saint of the day, St. Scholastica (feast day February 10th), whose life embodies a powerful truth for recovery: "She was able to do more because she loved more." Real change doesn't come from trying harder, it comes from learning to love and be loved and channeling that appropriately.

About Dr. Eddie Capparucci: Dr. Eddie is a licensed therapist specializing in sexual addiction and problematic sexual behavior, author of multiple books including "Going Deeper: How the Inner Child Impacts Your Sexual Addiction," and founder of the Inner Child Model for treatment.

    Jan 12 2026

In this powerful conversation, Jack Rigert joins the podcast to unpack St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body and its real-world impact on the battle with lust, shame, and sexual brokenness. Together, we explore not only what the Church teaches about the human person and how it can be lived by men and women struggling today.

Jack returned to the Catholic faith after twenty years away, sparked by profound encounters with Christ at his brother’s bedside and in the Eucharist. His journey reveals how shame isolates, how lust distorts desire, and how authentic love restores identity.

This episode goes beyond theory, addressing prevention, formation, and healing through the lens of Theology of the Body, discipleship, and lived conversion. Whether you’re fighting habitual sin, walking with someone who is, or seeking a deeper vision of love and the body, this conversation offers both truth and hope.
