  • #14: Etienne Haro | Hotel Manager of La Mamounia
    Sep 20 2023

Re-broadcast! Going all the way back to the beginning we bring you some of my favourite conversations from The Modern Club Management podcast. Watch out for some new episodes coming soon.

Today I am excited to be joined by global luxury hospitality leader Etienne Haro (LinkedIn). Etienne is the Hotel Manager of La Mamounia in Marrakesh. Prior to this Etienne’s roles have been across a who’s who of luxury hotel brands. He was the Executive Assistant Manager at the world famous Burj Al Arab, Director of Food & Beverage at Fairmont Hotels in Dubai and Kiev, for Hyatt in their Asia Pacific Divisional Office. These roles followed six years in Dubai leading the food and beverage operation at a number of InterContinental Hotels. And while doing all this Etienne has even found time to complete an MBA from the prestigious EHL Hospitality Business School.

Etienne talks about what made him switch from a planned career in ... to hospitality, what drew him to a life of service in hospitality and puts a smile on his face. We discuss talent equity and balancing the workload across all employees; not overloading your superstars. Etienne describes the importance of alignment with your operation, the power and importance of storytelling, taking control over all the facets that deliver on amazing guest experiences, and the non-obvious things he would look at in a F&B operation to move the level up, plus much more. This was one of my favourite conversations and one that I personally took copious amounts of notes on after re-listening a few times!

    Quotes in the episode

Maya Angelou: "Do the best you can until you know better. When you know better, do better."

Shakespeare's The Tempest: "There be some sports are painful, and their labour, delight in them sets off."

Marcus Aurelius: "What stands in the way. Becomes the way."

    Please enjoy this conversation.

  • #18: Monique Landman | Heart in the Boardroom
    Sep 27 2023

Re-broadcast! Going all the way back to the beginning we bring you some of my favourite conversations from The Modern Club Management podcast. Watch out for some new episodes coming soon.

In today's episode I speak with Monique Landman, the Chief Empathy Officer and Co-founder of Unchain. After a successful corporate career in strategy and communications, Monique found her heart eight years ago and a new calling in life to bring empathetic leadership to the world so that people can lead with more humanity. It has never been more important than now to have empathy and compassion as a leader. With the anxiety and uncertainty of Covid, burnout among employees, and a loneliness epidemic in many countries now is the time to stand up as a leader and face these tough situations with compassion and an understanding of how to do so.

After tuning in to a CMAE Friday Forum with Monique I was immediately interested in having her as a guest. And one of the questions by a club manager at the end in particular made me think this is an important conversation to have. How do we deal with emotion, burnout, anxiety in the work place? How should leaders approach this with their staff? Is there a wrong and right way? If you care about your team and want help with these tough conversations then take a listen.

I loved having this conversation with Monique and I hope you enjoy it also and have some actionable tools to use next time you find a colleague, or friend, who's having a rough time.

  • #16: Gareth Macklin | Simplifying safety and compliance in golf clubs
    Nov 17 2022

On today's episode I am joined by Gareth Macklin. Gareth is the Founder and Managing Director of Obbi Golf. Obbi golf is an integrated software platform that gives peace of mind to Golf Club Managers around their Compliance, Safety & Training in less than 5 seconds. Obbi is evolving at pace with the aim of becoming the number 1 Golf Compliance platform globally.

In this conversation Gareth outlines some of the potential pitfalls of getting safety compliance wrong. Is merely legal compliance enough? Or should we be aiming for best practice? When it comes to the health and safety of our staff I think it's hard to argue against striving for best practice. Not only is this the right thing to do for our staff but it has the potential to save clubs money and managers time.

I highly advise anyone involved in health and safety to take a listen to this episode, and whilst doing so ask yourself:

    • Could I save the club, and me; money; time; and potentially a major legal headache?
    • Is best practice in the interests of my staff and my committee/board? And me?
    • What if something went wrong and someone got seriously injured, or died? Could I look myself in the mirror and be confident saying I did everything I could to prevent this happening?
    • Would it be beneficial to me if I could see a quick overview of my H&S compliance and see any red flags that need attending to in less than 5 seconds?

  • #24: Jules Murray | Unconscious bias, diversity and misogyny in clubs
    Jan 5 2023
Welcome to Season 2 of the Modern Club Management Podcast. This season's theme is all around diversity in clubs. We'll be speaking with a diverse group of people from within the industry about their experiences, what we as an industry can do better to encourage diversity, how we can design golf courses to be more inclusive, why diversity of thought is so powerful, and much more. I hope you enjoy these conversations as much as I did. Listen to these with an open mind and be willing to have your current approach and thinking challenged. We start off season 2 with Jules Murray. Jules started her career in sales and business development before moving into training and consultancy. In 2006 Jules founded Spider on the Wall Ltd which offers managerial training, soft skills, and mystery shopping services. A regular on the CMAE MDP as a presenter, Jules is well known and liked within the club community and brings a contagious energy to all of her sessions. Her passion lies in designing and delivering fun, interactive and experiential training courses; which having had the good fortune in being in some of her sessions she definitely delivers this in spades.Jules' low hanging fruit to increase diversityJob adverts: de-bias the wording in your job adverts (website such as http://gender-decoder.katmatfield.com/ can be used to check your wording)CV selecting: avoid looking at the name, age, and gender. Focus on the skills and talents they could bring to the job. "Youth is no guarantee of creativity." Author unknown.Get more used to saying 'oh well' or 'so what': if they have a "silly" email address...so what? Does this mean they are unsuitable for the job?Interview with a diverse colleague who is completely different to you: e.g. if you're a 50 year old man interview candidates with a 20 year old female colleague. Use objective criteria and ask all candidates the same questions and look for areas of divergence in how you each rated them.Performance reviews: research shows that women are more likely to underrate themselves and men to overrate themselves. Plus in some cultures "boasting" can be seen negatively, therefore people may underrate themselves to appear humble.Shadow board: have a board full of younger members to gain diverse ideas.
