When Lindsey didn’t show for her job at the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department one morning, they knew something must be wrong. A wellness check revealed a gruesome scene and confirmed what they’d feared: Lindsey had been killed. The investigation revealed a pending divorce, financial troubles, jealousy, resentment, and more.

Episode 214: The Abduction of Kari Swenson

Kari Swenson was just 23 years old when she was a world biathlon competitor and athlete. On July 15, 1984, she was out for a training run in the Ulerys Lake area in Montana, she was abducted by a survivalist father-son duo, Don and Dan Nichols, who planned to force Kari to marry 19 year old Dan. When she didn’t return to the ranch she worked on, a search party set out to find her. When two of the searchers found Kari tied up, a chaotic scene unfolded in which one man lost his life and Kari nearly lost hers. She is only alive today due to her perseverance, resilience, and physical strength.

His life was cut short when he was murdered in the condo he shared with his brother Sam and their roommate, Thayne Smika. The investigation led to Thayne, but by the time they had enough evidence, he was in the wind. A Hollywood connection brought Sid’s case to the national media, but his case is still open. Linda Culbertson was a single mother of 3 who began a secretarial job working at the law office of Attorney Donald Pierce. While all who knew Don said he was a kind, hard working man who was madly in love with his wife, Linda perceived every interaction differently. In 1989 when Don was murdered at the office, few were in the building to say what happened. Investigators then uncovered a trail of jealousy, deceit, obsession and some — interesting — office supplies.

Mark Douglas Burns is a convicted rapist and murderer who committed brutal assaults as the early 1970s, with his last confirmed in 2001. In the 2010s, through genetic genealogy, he was linked to 11 open cases spanning different states and many years. He was called the “Clearfield rapist” until investigators learned the real name of the man they were hunting for. He is currently serving a 242 year prison sentence.

Selena Quintanilla, named the “Queen of Tijano music,” was an American singer, songwriter, and fashion icon who topped the charts in the 80s and 90s. Her career skyrocketed to global fame, but it was cut short when her path crossed with Yolanda Salvidar. Yolanda claimed to be Selena’s biggest fan, and formed a relationship with the star. Yolanda became the fan-club manager, headed two of Selena’s boutique’s, and became a dear friend of hers. When Yolanda’s embezzlement was uncovered, Selena ended their friendship, and Yolanda’s anger turned to a deadly rage.
