Českého rytíře se složitou minulostí Martina ze Stvolna postaví Karel IV. do čela poselstva mířícího do Svaté země ke Kristovu hrobu. Doprovází ho jeho žena Johanka, která však po několikaletém věznění v klášteře zchřadla a její duševní rovnováha zůstává otřesena.
