Českého rytíře se složitou minulostí Martina ze Stvolna postaví Karel IV. do čela poselstva mířícího do Svaté země ke Kristovu hrobu. Doprovází ho jeho žena Johanka, která však po několikaletém věznění v klášteře zchřadla a její duševní rovnováha zůstává otřesena. Poselstvo putuje přes Horní Uhry až do Transylvánie, kde se však Martin s Johankou proti své vůli ocitají na útěku před spravedlostí.
