If the author spent more time describing the world and characters and less time on excessively long descriptions of pipe tobacco flavours, beer ingredients and how amazing or incredible (seriously there are other ways to describe things - someone do a word count on those two words) the stitching on some fabric is, it might be more enjoyable. I mean unless it actually adds something to the plot I don't need to have a food critic review of every (I mean every) meal, I also don't care if this new tobacco has hints of couscous or snozberries! I actually cringed when a pipe was mentioned or a meal was eaten or a clothes shopping trip was planned...
