Story
In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid—a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.”

The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. Story
Meet Toadling. On the day of her birth, she was stolen from her family by the fairies, but she grew up safe and loved in the warm waters of faerieland. Once an adult though, the fae ask a favor of Toadling: return to the human world and offer a blessing of protection to a newborn child. Simple, right? If only. Centuries later, a knight approaches a towering wall of brambles, where the thorns are as thick as your arm and as sharp as swords. He's heard there's a curse here that needs breaking, but it's a curse Toadling will do anything to uphold.

Publisher's Summary
"Narrator Eric Mok makes this wonderfully inventive and diverse fantasy eminently accessible... Mok's Kai is appealing and relatable--he sounds simultaneously young and resigned, weary of death and pain and betrayal and yet still hopeful for something better. Listeners will hope we get more of this fascinating world."- AudioFile
From the breakout SFF superstar author of Murderbot comes a remarkable story of power and friendship, of trust and betrayal, and of the families we choose.
"I didn't know you were a... demon."
"You idiot. I'm the demon."
Kai's having a long day in Martha Wells' WITCH KING....
After being murdered, his consciousness dormant and unaware of the passing of time while confined in an elaborate water trap, Kai wakes to find a lesser mage attempting to harness Kai’s magic to his own advantage. That was never going to go well.
But why was Kai imprisoned in the first place? What has changed in the world since his assassination? And why does the Rising World Coalition appear to be growing in influence?
Kai will need to pull his allies close and draw on all his pain magic if he is to answer even the least of these questions.
He’s not going to like the answers.
WITCH KING is Martha Wells’s first new fantasy in over a decade, drawing together her signature ability to create characters we adore and identify with, alongside breathtaking action and adventure, and the wit and charm we’ve come to expect from one of the leading writers of her generation.
A Macmillan Audio production from Tor.com.
Critic Reviews
“A wildly original and complex fantasy exploring how revolutions are won through trust, and destroyed through selfishness. Wells excels at brooding, powerful inhuman protagonists who just need a little kindness to be their badass best.”—N. K. Jemisin
“Unlike anything I've ever read. A layered and complex novel that delivers on the promise of epic fantasy.”—Zoraida Córdova
“Fantasy readers looking for new worlds and characters to explore will be enthralled.”—Library Journal

It was ok
There was good worldbuilding and characters, but the story fell a little flat to me. Perhaps there was an issue with the narrator, perhaps there was something missing in terms of things-a-reader-just-has-to-find-out.

Excellent book
I really enjoyed the book. There is alot of names of places, characters and groups which made me have to start sections over to understand but all the information is there. Captures caring characters and magic. Excited for more of this.

Difficult as an audiobook
A big MW fan I was excited for new world building. The book would have benefited greatly from the Dramatist Personae being available to download as a pdf somewhere. There was a lot to take in and I repeated many chapters. This narrator really didn’t gel with me. It felt like a bullet point list being read, breaks in weird places and distracting from the story. I suspect it would have been better in a physical format. Characters were engaging once you got to know them.

Good Story
This is a great story with well developed characters and an almost natural World building . I wrote a previous review when I’d kept falling asleep sick and the book carried on without me. I said then that I’d listen again to give a fairer review, and this is now it. I enjoyed the book, the story, the characters and look forward to follow up books. As stated by a couple of other people it was difficult to follow as an audio book and I’m inclined to offer that this was due to the narration. The book keeps returning to the past and this is why it’s difficult. There is nothing to help you when listening to know where you are. I still had to backtrack often and this Is annoying. I would rather have read this book than listen to it. The narration does not help it makes the situation worse. I had hoped to write a better review but sadly cannot do so.

First time I’ve ditched an audiobook to read the actual book instead
I’m a huge Martha Wells fan and this is a great story. Unfortunately I just did not click with the narration. It was as if the narrator was reading aloud for the first time ever and so couldn’t get the flow of the language. Words were emphasised oddly, I couldn’t tell which character was speaking, and although I tried hard I had to give up after 2 hours of listening. I love the story so am reading the book on Kindle instead.

This is not Murderbot
A protracted exercise in world-building with a confusing plethora of character, location and group names. All of this would have been worth the time investment if the main character was more nuanced or the dialogue more engaging. The choice of narrator exacerbated the lack of listener engagement. It sounded as though he was toiling his way through the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Book 2 will have to be amazing to turn this turgid tale around.

Disappointing
Could not finish, the turnabout nature of one chapter in the present and the next in some past battle was tedious. Too many characters to keep track of and there was a lot of dialogue and not much world building. The narrator pronounced ‘legionary’ as ‘lesionary’ for half the book, distracting.
