About this listen
A new land has been discovered to the east. Winterkeep is a land of miracles, a democratic republic run by people who like each other, where people speak to telepathic sea creatures, adopt telepathic foxes as pets, and fly across the sky in ships attached to balloons.
But when Bitterblue's envoys to Winterkeep drown under suspicious circumstances, she and Giddon and her half-sister, Hava, set off to discover the truth - putting both Bitterblue's life and Giddon's heart to the test when Bitterblue is kidnapped. Giddon believes she has drowned, leaving him and Hava to solve the mystery of what's wrong in Winterkeep.
Lovisa Cavenda is the teenage daughter of a powerful Scholar and Industrialist (the opposing governing parties) with a fire inside her that is always hungry, always just nearly about to make something happen. She is the key to everything, but only if she can figure out what's going on before anyone else, and only if she's willing to transcend the person she's been all her life.

The silver cows are awesome, as are the blue foxes, the monster, airships etc etc. There’s a bit of politics and love stories.best of all, the author’s clear love of animals!
I think my daughter will love it, given another couple of years.
The narrator does a fabulous job with different accents which I don’t think the author required, however it works perfectly.
Very different and original. Must say, some of the names seem to be taken from earlier pre-existing texts and another for example Lovisa, is the name of a successful jewellery company. That’s a minor comment as everything else appears unique.
Love this story! Magical mystical fantasy with complexity and depth

review:
this is a hyper-abusive refraction from the graceling series.
absolutely loved this series before this book but it has been a monotonous undertaking to say the least. the prose is immature. the world building was interesting to begin with until it paired itself with the south-asian accent the white narrator was putting on and seemed to be more a about stereotypes. it wasn’t just a step sideways from the dells or monsea/estill etc. it was a kilometre walk away. the city was confusing and explained in a way that clearly only made sense to the author. there was a sense that i should have done prior research.
the pièce de résistance was having to sit behind the bystander of the family (lovisa) while her parents committed atrocities against herself, her younger siblings, and other innocent people. this really seemed like it was trying to be a critique of the current environmental climate, but in reality was a story lacking depth and continuity. don’t get me started on the out-of-context sea creatures.
white woman does south asian accent and it’s very uncomfortable
