Story
Mercenary Casia Greythorne cares about two things: completing whatever her latest job is and earning enough coin to buy the expensive medicine that's keeping her mentor alive. So when the king himself offers her a job, she can't resist the massive reward he offers - even if it means working with Captain Elander, the arrogant, mysterious right-hand to that king. Her partner may be infuriating, but at least their mission seems simple and quick enough: investigate the origins of the strange plague that's been ravaging their empire, help find a cure, and then call it a day.

Publisher's Summary
A new land has been discovered to the east. Winterkeep is a land of miracles, a democratic republic run by people who like each other, where people speak to telepathic sea creatures, adopt telepathic foxes as pets, and fly across the sky in ships attached to balloons.
But when Bitterblue's envoys to Winterkeep drown under suspicious circumstances, she and Giddon and her half-sister, Hava, set off to discover the truth - putting both Bitterblue's life and Giddon's heart to the test when Bitterblue is kidnapped. Giddon believes she has drowned, leaving him and Hava to solve the mystery of what's wrong in Winterkeep.
Lovisa Cavenda is the teenage daughter of a powerful Scholar and Industrialist (the opposing governing parties) with a fire inside her that is always hungry, always just nearly about to make something happen. She is the key to everything, but only if she can figure out what's going on before anyone else, and only if she's willing to transcend the person she's been all her life.

Solid new instalment to the original 3
Thoroughly enjoyed re-entering this world. And having the same narrator just makes it even better.

Excellent read
I was so excited when this came out and I wasn't disappointed, I love this series, definitely putting this series on my reread list. Also just found out there's a graphic novel coming out! Very excited for that!

Sloppy overall and what a shame!
It's a shame that this was not anywhere near as good as the other books in this series . . . I only got through it because I wanted to learn what happened to Bitterblue and Giddon. I really wish their story and relationship deepened in another land - perhaps one we already know about like facing monsters in the Dells or something instead of facing grenades, airships, and telepathic foxes. I didn't care at all about Lovisa and hope she's out of the series altogether, although Adventure Fox probably grew on me a little. The narrator whilst Stellar in every book thus far, especially with the Welsh accents - really confused me in this one - one minute I was listening to a Jamaican accent and the next it was Indian. Sloppy overall and what a shame!

A bit of a miss
I love the Graceling world and was looking forward to reading this book.... But was disappointed to find it's centred around a new character called Lovisa. Lovisa is a pretty unlikeable character in the first two thirds of the book, which is awkward because she's the protagonist. I keep listening, hoping she gets more likeable or develops a redeeming feature but she's just not a very nice character to listen to.

white woman does south asian accent and it’s very uncomfortable
before i start this review i would like to make this so clear - it was and is violently uncomfortable to listen to a white women put on a south asian accent for this role. i am unsure why there couldn’t have been a south-asian voice actor brought in for this. i understand the want of continuity however this work felt more like a half-arsed racist impression than authentically kind, or reasonable to include.
review:
this is a hyper-abusive refraction from the graceling series.
absolutely loved this series before this book but it has been a monotonous undertaking to say the least. the prose is immature. the world building was interesting to begin with until it paired itself with the south-asian accent the white narrator was putting on and seemed to be more a about stereotypes. it wasn’t just a step sideways from the dells or monsea/estill etc. it was a kilometre walk away. the city was confusing and explained in a way that clearly only made sense to the author. there was a sense that i should have done prior research.
the pièce de résistance was having to sit behind the bystander of the family (lovisa) while her parents committed atrocities against herself, her younger siblings, and other innocent people. this really seemed like it was trying to be a critique of the current environmental climate, but in reality was a story lacking depth and continuity. don’t get me started on the out-of-context sea creatures.
