Publisher's Summary

There's never been any question in Sean Tucker's mind that he'd do whatever it took to make it to the major leagues and be one of the best pitchers of his time. The day he acknowledged to himself that he was gay was also the day he vowed to stay in the closet in order to chase his dreams. The problem is, he never counted on Mason Atley.

Sean showed rookie short stop Mason Atley the ropes, both on the field and off. The two forged a friendship, which continued as both of them moved through the ranks of the farm system and into the majors. Unfortunately, there's always been one secret Mason never felt he could share with Sean - until now.

For seven years, Sean lived with the fact that he loved a man who would never reciprocate. When Mason admits that he's always known he was bisexual but has never allowed himself to pursue a relationship with a man, will Sean be able to put aside his reservations about starting a relationship with the friend he'd always assumed was straight? And, more importantly, will they be able to find a way to stay together when their careers keep them apart more than they can be together?

Horrible narration!

I wish I had listened to the bad review one reviewer gave about the narration. It was slow with individual words said instead of flowing sentences. The narrator mispronounced so many words I couldn't keep track of them. Common words. "Rescind" does not have a long "i" sound in it. A few other words: haphazard, strenuous, and the Cy Young Award is not C. Y. Young! Brutal listening.

Decent story - Bad Narration

It wasn't a terribly original story, but was sweet and well told. I liked the characters enough to give it an overall favorable review and overlook the fact that I've basically read this story before.

This narrator has potential, but didn't hit it on this book. This was not the worst narration I've ever heard and I did listen to the whole book. (I've been known to quit after a chapter with a few bad narrations.) He has a nice enough voice, *bad* female voices though. His pacing/timing was off though and yes, many many mispronunciations - for me the worst was wrought as in wrought iron. I don't know what he said but it definitely wasn't wrought. I can forgive or overlook one or two stalls in pacing or strange pronunciations but this book was SO full of them I don't know that I will be able to listen to it a second time, even though I liked the story well enough. I hope if Christopher Rain is to continue as a regular narrator that he learns as he goes. I'd give him a second chance, but probably not a third unless things improve.

Wish I'd waited for it to be on sale or available through the lending library.

Luckily, I purchased the kindle version.

What would have made Wild Pitch better?

The narrator was not desirable. He's voice sounded as if he was choking, flat. Mason's ex-wife's voice was cringe-worthy. The other women voices were bearable.

Has Wild Pitch turned you off from other books in this genre?

No.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

YES. YES. YES!

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The story line wasn't bad. However, the narrator did not do the story justice.

Bad narration murders a good book. :(

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A different narrator would have made all the difference. I'm pretty sure this narrator has never read aloud in English before despite the fact that his voice indicates his native language is, indeed, English. The story is good, not amazing, but quite good with a nice HEA, but the narration made listening to the audible version a painful experience.

If you’ve listened to books by Sloan Johnson before, how does this one compare?

I have not listened to other audible books written by Sloan Johnson. However, I have read several of her books, and I like them. This book is quite similar in theme and tone to the others I've read. I'm disappointed that the same narrator performs the next book in this series, because there's no way I'm going to waste money on it despite the fact that I really like the series.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Christopher Rain?

Jason Frazier, Sean Crisden or Charlie David

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The story was quite good. I liked the main characters, the setting, the tone - everything EXCEPT the narration.

Any additional comments?

Please get Christopher Rain a teacher/director/sound editor/dictionary with pronunciations. He is too slow and monotone, and he doesn't seem to read aloud with ease and fluidity. He has a good, deep voice that would be lovely to listen to with appropriate pronunciation, inflection and diction, but without some additional training, he will continue to murder innocent audio-books.

friends to lovers Sports Romance

This is a sports romance about two friends becoming lovers. Sean and Mason had been friends for years, although he was out to Mason. he was still closeted, none of his teammates knew. Sean wanted Mason, he always thought he was straight, on learning that he wasn't quite on the line threw Sean for a curved ball. He didn't want to mess up the friendship they have, so he buried his feelings until he couldn't anymore. Being gay in the sporting industry can be hard and most people tend to keep it a secret in fair of being fired, picked on, and ostracize. These two make it work. So how long can they keep the secret? Read this book and find out.. I highly recommend this series. Sloan Johnson, I enjoyed this story and will be reading the rest of the series.

No Cheating Here

I love friends to lovers and Sean and Mason!! I don't see it as cheating when a marriage is over to look for rebounds and comfort while the divorce is proceeding. It's a normal way to move forward and move on. She cheated on Mason!! I wish the guys hadn't wasted time with unnecessary concerns, but they needed to process, I guess! Mason's ex was a delirious shrew!!! Abi turned out to be more adult and thoughtful than I originally saw her. Abi was a good catalyst for the guys and a great go between conspirator. The narrator was good, but did mispronounce several words. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review.

A good friends to lovers sports romance

Wild Pitch is a good baseball romance. Sean is a pitcher in the major leagues. One of the two things he has always dreamed of and gotten. The other was Mason, his straight best friend. This dream was out of his reach or so he thought. Mason has always had feelings for Sean, but he didn’t know how deep. I liked the slow burn and friends to lover’s aspect of this story. I did wonder what team Mason played on and if they were on different teams why they lived in the same town, but I really don’t know much about baseball so I didn’t let that bother me so much and read for the romance which I liked. I listened to this on audio and will admit I had likes and dislikes on this narrator. I did like Mason’s deep gravelly voice and Sean’s gentler one so I could tell them apart. I did not like the actual narration. It felt like a read, the pacing wasn’t good, and it was very choppy. But if you are looking for a hands-free way to read the book while doing other things it is ok.

Good story

This is one of my favorite books but I had to listen with the increased speed 1.25 as it was read too slow for me.

Great Story...

The story was great, however the narrator sounded bored the whole time. He was just very monotoned and I couldn’t speed him up because then the words got all jumbled. He has a great voice, just needs to make it seem like he’s not reading the phone book.

Great book, narrating boring

I loved the book and I reread periodically because of it. I thought it would be great to get the audio version. I was so disappointed that after the third chapter I asked for refund. I’m sorry but the characters did not come to life.

I don't know...

What disappointed you about Wild Pitch?

The narrator is a favorite of the author's. This book has decided for me that I won't be listening to anymore of his audiobooks. He speaks like a robot, slow and monotonous. In this day, we can pick narrators that "add" the inflections. Not this one. I feel like he talks to us like we are little kids.

Would you ever listen to anything by Sloan Johnson again?

Not anymore. :(

Any additional comments?

Read the book on your own but be prepared for contradictions from page one. Example - "We would do anything for the bride. Mason is so in love with her." to "He is a complete mess and she is a complete b*tch"

An okay baseball romance

Major League Baseball players, Sean and Mason are best friends. Sean has never admitted he is gay or that he had a crush on Mason. With the end of his marriage, Mason has some feelings of his own to grapple with. I didn’t mind this but I didn’t love it. I quite liked the two main characters, but I didn’t quite connect with them. I felt like the author bundled in a bunch of tropes but didn’t give them depth, mostly low angst. I had a lot of trouble with misogyny towards the ex-wife and other women in the book - strange from a female author but not unheard of. 🎧 I liked Christopher Rain’s timbre and expression, he suited the characters. He spoke more slowly than I prefer, so I increased the playback speed a little and that was perfect.

as good as the ebook

The story is always 4 or 5 stars, because if I wouldn't like the story as ebook, I wouldn't listen to the audiobook. The performance from the narrator is also very important for me. I can't listen to a lot, because my English as a non-native-speaker isn't so perfect to follow a whole story over hours, when the narrator speaks too fast or too sloppy. Normally I have to SEE the person, who is talking to me in English. It took me a little bit, to come into the narrator, but at the end, it worked. I only have to take a few breaks between. I'm just not yet finish with the book, but I listen enough to give a review. PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!! To my ratings: 5* - very very good it's like an A+ 4* - very good and will be often re-listening it's like an A 3* - it's more then a one-time-listening. it's like a B
