Story
Hugh van Cuylenburg was a primary school teacher volunteering in northern India when he had a life-changing realisation: despite the underprivileged community the children were from, they were remarkably positive. By contrast, back in Australia Hugh knew that all too many children struggled with depression, social anxieties and mental illness. His own little sister had been ravaged by anorexia nervosa. How was it that young people he knew at home, who had food, shelter, friends and a loving family, struggled with their mental health, while these kids seemed so contented and resilient?

This would probably be a good book if you've never read a self help book before.
If you've read any self help books before, this is just a regurgitation.
Or at least that's all I got from it before I couldn't listen any longer.

Great practical guide - but please be careful with recommending meditation
There is a building body of evidence suggesting myriad adverse effects meditation can have - particularly for those experiencing trauma. It might be worth suggesting that people watch out for vispassana meditation retreats and or other intensive practices can cause people to experience things such as involuntary tics and twitches, repressed memories reappearing and more. There are also cults that feed on this vulnerability. Mediation is also out of step with the modern experience, so it’s worth suggesting that not too much emphasis should be placing pressure on learning the theistic core of meditation practice. Just some thoughts. Great speaking voice, great practical guide otherwise. But we do owe a great deal of respect for the modern appropriation of ancient religions as tools for mental health. They weren’t always used like this and Buddhism has been a way of life and cultural phenomenon for a long, long time. So it’s worth researching and letting the audience know this. It is powerful and has been used by cult leaders. (Not saying you are doing this, obviously! Hahaha)

I learnt so much thanks to Dr Julie Smith. I also loved how she Narrated her own book, and how she combined, Psychology, Mental Health Practical Tips, Real Life Stories & her own personal stories in a really easy way. With so much going on in the World and Communities today, I feel much more equipped as I now have so many more knowledge, insight, tips, hacks, practices to support me along the way. I also hope if you have now read my review & choose to read this book it always brings you that same learning experience. Yvette Le Blowitz, Australia

A MUST read
This is a must read for any human being. This is the best gift you could give yourself or any one of your loved ones. It’s a precious book that holds a special place in my heart (and book shelf ;)) and I will keep my eyes open in case the author decides to release anything else.
This book is a guide for life and I liked that she included “toolkit” sections because this is exactly what I felt this book gave me - a toolkit for how to live my life in the best way possible, to navigate it confidently, with the right outlook, attitude, mindset and approach, be present, deal with things the right way for positive outcomes and really bring the best out of it.
I loved the title, the structure and of course the content. It was full of insight and impactful knowledge and it was organized so well!
The narration was perfection.
This is a book you get back to, reference in many different circumstances and recommend to anyone who would listen.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did 🙏🏻

I have been a Dr. Julie Smith follower in Instagram for ages now. I love her videos and I was very excited when she announced her book, unfortunately it wasn's available in South Africa just yet so I started listening to the audio book and I have loved it. Her voice is easy to follow, only downside is that I have been listening to it while driving and there are times when I wish I could write things down. This book provides great tips that are easy to follow and I look forward to implementing them.
Thank you Dr. Smith for showing me that I'm not alone in trying to figure out this thing called life.

Useful info but lots of healthism and ableism
I enjoyed the book overall. As someone with 3 psychology degrees, a lot of it wasn’t new to me but it was presented in a way that was engaging and easy to read.
There was a lot of focus on physical health and sadly no discussion or even acknowledgement of the social determinants of health. These have been consistently demonstrated to contribute to 80-90% of health outcomes so ignoring them in favour of endless talk about exercise and diet is a huge omission.
Within the huge amount of content on health-promoting behaviours there was also no acknowledgement of the barriers that people face in being able to engage in them. Not everyone is in a position to simply make a ‘choice’ about doing more exercise. No mention of privilege is another huge oversight.
Worth a read but it’s certainly far from a comprehensive perspective of all the factors that influence mental (and physical) health and far too individualistic. Clearly well-intended but misses the mark.

Here’s hoping!
I’ve watched many of Dr. Julie’s short videos on social media, and became quickly hooked on the way they made me feel.
I was going to buy the book, but was given an Audible subscription for Xmas so this audible book was destined to be my first purchase.
I like that Dr Julie narrates it, as it feels like she’s talking to me direct.
Even after just a few chapters I have started using the techniques she describes, eg writing down what I’m grateful for! I now realise I’ve been in ‘low mood’ for quite some time!
Its only been a few days since publication but this morning I feel better than I have for a long time, and feel ‘my body has a smile’
Lots more left to listen to, but, here’s hoping for a real change in my mood and lifestyle!
Ps. I’ll probably end up buying the book as well!

A dull and boring guide to self-counselling
A dull and boring guide to self-counselling.
This book probably sounded good when pitched to an editor off the back of a successful social media account, and I imagine it will find an audience based on the promise alone.
However that promise of a ‘one size fits all’ approach to self-counselling is simply not realised and we are left with a book that promises much but delivers little.
There is far too little time afforded to far too many complex matters and the book feels flat, dull, and boring as a result.

A toolkit we all need
I could not stop listening! This book gently gives an insight to the tools for life which everyone will benefit from. I have loved listening so much - I will be buying the paper copy to keep reading!

Annoying references
Im on chapter two of the audio book and already think it’s not well adapted for audio. Reference to images/diagrams on the next page not ideal when you are listening to the book

Wow. What a book! A guide for life!
I haven't even listened to all the sections of the book yet, only the three that I found most applied to my issues, but the book has already proved indispensable. I especially appreciate Dr Julie's heavy focus on practicality and the realities of life - e.g. when she acknowledges that some stressful elements in life are impossible to remove and one simply has to learn to manage the stress in a healthy way.
This book is really a treasure trove of sensible, practical, down-to-earth and easily actionable advice on facing and dealing with the challenges of life.
Thank you, Dr Julie!

Rubbish
Nobody told you because it wasn’t worth saying! Not even in multicoloured don’t!
The narrators voice is nice. 🤔
