About this listen

A young detective investigating crimes of the uncanny will learn that bargains can change your fate—for good or ill—in this darkly enthralling fantasy from the New York Times bestselling author of the Others and the Black Jewels series.

Words have power. Intentions matter.

Most people come to Destiny Park for entertainment. They come to have their cards read to tell them a bit about their future. They come to walk through a beautiful park and to eat at the hotel’s restaurant. They come in the hope of catching a glimpse of the Arcana, the paranormal beings who rule the Isle of Wyrd.

But some people come to make a bargain with the Arcana—to change their fate. And some people come for dark purposes.

When Detective Beth Fahey is sent to Destiny Park to inquire about a “ghost gun,” she will begin a strange journey on which she must learn to navigate the Arcana’s unforgiving laws and dangerous attractions. Her search will draw her into seemingly impossible cases and the secrets of her own past as tensions rise between the Arcana and their human neighbors across the river.

For the Isle of Wyrd is a place where the dead ride trains to their final destinations, predators literally become prey, and seekers’ true natures are revealed in the ripples of destiny unknowingly stirred in their wakes.

Who will live? Who will die? And who will be lost in between?

Critic Reviews

“Bishop’s series opener is a story of fate, truth, and consequences, compelling in its description of a world where humans are not in charge yet still have the hubris to believe they are, and where the wild, the weird, and the wonderful are forces that demand obedience and responsibility, as seen through the eyes of a determined investigator who can see both sides of a seemingly insurmountable divide. . . . Highly recommended for lovers of dark fantasy and weird urban fantasy, especially fans of Bishop’s “World of the Others” series.”—Library Journal (starred review)

“An entertaining and sometimes brutal tale of magic, mystery, and mischief.”—Publishers Weekly

“Bishop's series starter is a satisfying tale of consequences and bargains, both for good and ill, with a central character who works through difficult changes and ultimately lands on her feet.”—Booklist

“After finishing Turns of Fate, I've moved from an interested reader to a fan. While there is still a lot of mystery around Wyrd and its inhabitants, Turns of Fate puts a lot of pieces in play to allow those mysteries to be explored in future books, and I'm here for it."—Game Vortex

while I quite enjoyed the narrator and the story, there was a sameness to this of Anne Bishop's Others series.

She never disappoints with her world creation and the characters that bring it to life. Another story to add to the favorites must reread list. Thank you.

Another awesome world creation by Anne Bishop

I have enjoyed Anne Bishop's books since the mid 2000s, and this is no different. Listened to the audiobook before getting my hands on a physical copy, and really enjoyed the narrator - which is a big thing for me as I prefer to read a book before getting an audiobook. Can't wait to see what's in store for book 2.

An interesting start to a new series

I had enjoyed The Others series immensely in the past. So, I gave this new series a go. Was not disappointed- Not as dark as The Others but in a similar vain. With aspects of how strange and foreign those who walk and live in the human world but belong to somewhere else.
Like Beth and her coming to terms with who she is and the stories in between. A slow, measured storytelling which I could not put down. Can’t wait for the next instalment. Great performance 🎭 especially on Beth and Frost.

A perfect addition for those who loved the Others
