An Amazon Charts Bestseller.

A double homicide and a missing woman lead a detective to unearth disturbing secrets in this gripping thriller from USA Today bestselling author Debra Webb.

It’s the worst possible time for Detective Kerri Devlin to be involved in an all-consuming double-homicide case. She’s locked in a bitter struggle with her ex-husband and teenage daughter, and her reckless new partner is anything but trustworthy.

Still, she has a job to do: There’s a killer at large, and a pregnant woman has gone missing. Once Devlin and her partner get to work, they quickly unearth secrets involving Birmingham’s most esteemed citizens. Each new layer of the investigation brings Devlin closer to the killer and the missing woman, who starts looking more like a suspect than a victim.

But just as answers come into view, the case twists, expands, and slithers into Devlin’s personal life. There’s a much more sinister game at work, one she doesn’t even know she’s playing - and she must unravel the truth once and for all to stop the killer before she loses everything.

Good

The story was really good, but hard to follow due to narration. All of the women sounded the same and I couldn’t tell who was who. The narrator could have done a better job of distinguishing the characters. This would have been much better with multiple narrators.

Wow!

I was skeptical about purchasing this book since there were no prior reviews but what a pleasant surprise! I live just north of Birmingham, AL so the locations and specifics were even more intriguing. I hope to see more from this author!!!

A great, suspenseful storyline.

The only downside was the narration in my opinion. It seemed through the whole story the narrator, maybe in attempt to sound southern, made the lead character sound like a very depressed, unconfident and kind of whiny when if I'm not mistaken she's supposed to be one of the departments best detectives?? Probably would've come off better if narrated by someone who has a southern accent naturally.

Loved it!

Debra Webb writes the suspense/thrillers I want to read. This one has a new detective team with plenty of chemistry (no romance - yet), a crime involving Birmingham Old Money, politics, and revenge. For me it was a page-turner (hence the 5 star rating). I can't wait to see what case Detectives Devlin & Falco are tasked with solving next. I hope they're around for a long time.
Loved the audiobook narrated by Donna Postel - she did a great job!

Good story

The story was good, but I like the performer to change their voice for the different characters but this one didn't do that. so it was hard telling which one was supposed to be speaking.

Good!!

This is a really good read!! It’s not a story I will carry with me forever but it’s a damn good mystery. I wouldn’t say it’s a “whodunnit” crime story because you know who the killer is the whole time but you just need to know why and how this person has done whatever they had to do!

Outstanding!

Took me a while to get into this, but am I glad I persevered. When things started moving - WOW!! Characters were so well described I felt I knew them. Loved loved loved Cross and the relationship she had with Falco. Carrie was so well described as cop, mother, sister and aunt. I did have a bit of a hard time with all of her family being so much a part of the whole crime wave. A bit too convenient. Outside of that - great story.

I will not buy this author's work again

I learned early on to make up a document for Audible Authors with ratings being I don't want to buy from authors that use the name of Jesus as a curse word, hear audible porn, etc. I can take occasional F bombs, but using the name of Jesus as a curse word, or, audible porn, is not something I want to hear, or support the author by buying any future work. This story was ok as a mystery, but because of the language used, I won't be purchasing anything in the future done by this author.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why authors go out of their way, to offend a certain portion of their audience. In the case of using the name of Jesus as a curse word, it adds nothing to the story, and only adds a negative for a portion of the audience. Anyway, this author has a rating in my document for 'Do not buy'.

Entertaining

I found this book to be entertaining with most of the characters well developed. The plot has twists and turns that help keep the suspense going. What I didn’t like is that the book has so many characters! It was hard to keep up with who is who
