Vers 1875, épuisé par le travail, les échecs et la ruine financière, Flaubert se jette dans la rédaction d'une trilogie de courts récits. Le "Cœur simple" est celui de Félicité, la servante usée par l'esclavage domestique qui a reporté son besoin d'affection sur un perroquet. Pour "Hérodias" et "La Légende de saint Julien l'Hospitalier", le jeune seigneur criminel du Moyen Âge, Flaubert remonte à son enfance, quand il contemplait leurs exploits sur les vitraux de la cathédrale de Rouen. Ces Trois contes, "écrits pour se délasser", sont l'ultime chef-d'œuvre de Flaubert, cet homme dont l'unique vocation était celle de l'art et de la beauté.
