The quadrant is on the brink of all-out civil war, but almost nobody knows it. After the daring rescue of a political dissident, Omega Force is contracted to investigate a rash of violent attacks on civilian shipping lanes within a group of star systems known as the Concordian Cluster. It seems a simple enough job with a huge payday at the end, and it's exactly what the ragtag group of mercenaries needs in order to keep their ship flying and to stay one step ahead of those hunting them.

Story
Aliens exist...and, as it turns out, most of them aren’t that friendly. Jacob Brown wasn’t even born yet the first time they attacked Earth. He was only 14 the second time it happened. When Earth finally came together and fielded its first spaceborne military, Jacob didn’t hesitate to volunteer. Serving aboard a mighty starship, he’d be able to defend his planet - and his family - when, inevitably, they came again.

Publisher's Summary
A new killer is cutting a bloody swath through the frontier worlds.
Rumors of its exploits are spreading and, like a ghost, nobody even knows what it looks like.
Captain Jason Burke and his crew watch this growing menace with a mix of unease...and guilt. They know who this killer is. He used to be one of them.
Seven, as he now called himself, is their former crewmate. The powerful, sentient machine that had once gone by Lucky has suffered a psychotic break and is now a problem that Omega Force has to deal with. Jason wants to believe that he can still save Lucky, but the longer Seven remains, the more he has to admit that it might be better for everybody if he was just eliminated before he can hurt any more innocents. The real question is can they even do it? Many have gone up against Seven already. None were alive to talk about it. The Omega Force crew is in for the fight of their lives against someone who knows everything about them.
Every strength.
Every weakness.
Can Jason take down Seven without losing anyone else?

Give me more of this series...
I loved this series! The characters: Jason, Crusher, Lucky, Kage, Doc and Twingo were the funniest and craziest aliens, and 1 human, I've ever enjoyed reading about. I don't think any of then never threaten they would murder the others BUT they loved one another like brothers and would give their lives for the others. They were an awesome group of "mercs."
This story was about ridding the galaxy of the Machine, and they did, somewhat. Then there was problems with Jason's
ex-love Kellea and an assassin looking for her. Then Mok went on a killing rampage, and all those Captains of the ConFed deserved what they got, having attacked and killing over 8 million innocents on Mok's planet.
This was a very exciting book and I'm assuming another one is coming, at least I hope there is.
No romance and the F-bomb was used 25 times.
As for the narration: As with every other book in this series Paul Heitsch was phenomenal.

Old friends return, hurrah!
This is an enjoyable romp with friends. I was really glad to see(hear) these guys again. Paul Heitch's narration still amazes me. How does he do Crusher? This installment is likely a transition to another storyline. If you are looking for a "journey of personal growth," this ain't it. I think we'll get it eventually but this isn't exactly the series i'd be listening to for that anyway. Raise a beer to the crew of Phoenix!
