Publisher's Summary

The third Dragonriders of Pern novel from the New York Times best seller Anne McCaffrey.

There has never been a dragon quite like Ruth - he's small, agile, able to communicate with fire lizards and has an uncanny ability to know exactly when he is. His bond with the young Lord Holder Jaxom is uniquely strong thanks to their unlikely connection and the fact that nearly everybody else on Pern thought the diminutive dragon wouldn't survive to adulthood. With Jaxom set to inherit control of his Hold, the pair is banned from fighting Thread, their flying time strictly limited at the insistence of the Weyrleaders and Lord Holders.

Stuck halfway between the Holds and Weyrs, Jaxom and Ruth decide to train in secret, learning how to fight Thread and how to fly through time. Their illicit flights seem like a small rebellion against the expectations of their elders, until they find themselves in the path of danger and in a position to prevent the biggest disaster of all....

Don't buy it.

I loved this book as a teenager and was hoping for a nostalgic revisit.
Unfortunately although Audible finally found a narrator from the UK to read one of the Pern books, I found the character voices he affectedvtoo jarring to listen for very long.
Ruth sounds like snake/villain. Robinton sounds like Errol Flynn/ the Dread Pirate Roberts. One of the dragon riders who appears to act as a guardian is made to sound slow and stupid. I can only assume the narrator is not familiar with the Pern novels or beloved recurring characters.
I returned this book.

WORST narration EVER

My favourite story trashed by terrible narration. Could not manage one chapter. TERRIBLE job. Just cannot emphasize just how bad it is. The primary characters sound like they have some mental affliction.

If you ignore Ruth's voice, a very good listen

I'm listening to all the Pern stories that I had read as they came out, and enjoying them all. This one is delightful, following the little dragon and his Impressed, and progressing the world of Pern. The narrator does a truly exceptional job with the voices, everyone distinct and clear, and owned by each character. I cannot compliment him on this highly enough. Unfortunately it does have one exception, and that's, of all characters to be poor on, the titular character, Ruth the White Dragon. A tiny sport, not expected to survive, he sound like a querulous old man right from hatching, crotchety and a teeny bit senile at times in his speech pattern. Otherwise a really good book.

Love Ruth

I love this book, it's my favorite of all the Peen series.
some of the voices could have been more intelligent sounding but in all really enjoyable.

Not well narrated

I like the story (I read it when I was younger), but the narrator's different voices is so far from what I'd imagined. I know it's a matter of preference, but to me a dragon's voice is a rumble more than a croak - he made them sound like frogs!
I couldn't finish it, I was too annoyed.

My favourite Pern story.

Good story that was read well, the only annoyance being the slight fluctuations in volume.

White Dragon Review

This story was totally ruined by the narrator. His rendition of the women characters and of a young dragon were terrible. He made them sound like they were 90 years old and senile.

Why?

The narration part is great, the voices less so.
Ruth has always been my favourite dragon, but in this he just sounds like an old man, and there’s nothing to let us know when he, or the other dragons, talk with their riders, it sounds like all the other conversations in here. Ruins the narration for me

Story Fantastic! Reader Disappointing

Very disappointed with this audio of a book that I’ve read n reread n though the story itself is great, it’s really let down by the reader, who seems to have no idea of what he’s actually doing. Ruth sounds like a crotchety old man, Robinton (who’s voice is supposed to be so descriptive???) is not much better. Pacing of sentences n paragraphs etc is quite often said so wrong that the emphasis of the story is lost, etc, etc.

The best dragon rider book.

The story is great but the narrator isn't very good in my opunion & the creepy voice used for Ruth is really bad. Frankly it ruins the character almost completely & detracts from the performance & story, which is a massive shame.

Another thrilling tale, 1 small quibble

Never get tired of Anne McCaffrey 's dragon tales. This one of Ruth and Jaxom showing what determination can prove.
My quibble however is that across all the different Pern books now in audible each narrator has their own way of pronouncing the characters names. I personally find it annoying that there is no set way. The authors family must be able to provide the correct way that Anne had in her mind while writing. and those co-written with family members the same. To have that continuity would make the story flow much better.

As good on Audible as I Remember reading it

Anne Mcaffrey’s dragon rider books have always been favourites of mine and over 40 years on since I first read this one this is still fresh and fun to listen to. This audible version is very well narrated (unlike many of the other books in this series so far) with great characterisation of the participants by Joe Jameson. He has really caught the character of Jaxom and the other characters very well indeed with good use of accents and intonation to differentiate them from each other.. Great listening all round!

Excellent

I first read this book when I was a teenager roughly 12/13 years old in my school library ..... now I've heard it at age 48 nearly 36 years later - still interesting and entertaining all these years later - I am blessed with a good memory - so I have to give myself a good break between books - but even now after all this time I was anticipating from memory some of the characters reactions! 😁
