About this listen

You can't see them. But they can see you.

This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams.

Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time. Afraid and trapped among strangers, Mina is desperate for answers. Who are the watchers and why are these creatures keeping them imprisoned, keen to watch their every move?

This could have been explored more authentically and interestingly but if you like surface level story telling, this is for you.

Generic characters and formulaic writing

Very listenable. Though not particularly scary, it does well to create a creepy and rather bleak atmosphere.
You won't see the twist coming, because it feels a bit shoe-horned in at the end, and needed to be supported by flashbacks of incidents and conversations that aren't shared with the reader till after the reveal.
The ending is even more frustrating, all the lore established tossed out in the very last paragraph to provide an unsatisfying cliffhanger.
If it's the beginning of a series though, I'd definitely give the next book a try.

Very atmospheric.

Not one to write reviews but I did enjoy listening to The Watchers. Ancient lore fused with today. Narration was excellent and right fir this story. Recommend if you like being scared.

Totally listenable

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. A nice mix of Irish folklore and the modern world. I was quite intrigued by the world the author created and was very satisfied by the answers it gives and the right amount of questions left unanswered to be left in suspense. I couldn't stop listening. I didn't find it scary but absolutely found the interesting.
I loved how the reader voiced the characters and the Irish accent absolutely lent itself to the story and folklore.

Perfect for getting back into audiobooks

Beautifully written, haunting, terrifying in parts. I listened long into the night with a pending heart

Exactly what I've been looking for in a novel

I liked who the watchers turned out to be, which would be expected in an earlier Ireland. The story was pretty original. At least, I haven't come across a similar story. I enjoyed listening to it.
But in the back of my mind, I kept wondering why no one just carried an old horseshoe around or something.

Mythical yet original

Shine is a very good quiet horror writer and this book also has a touch of cosmic horror element running underneath it. Particularly good at making characters full of varied.
The narrator is fantastic as well. Wonderful accent.

A very good book and narrator

Beautiful prose and descriptions that give you just enough information for your brain to paint a picture. The story is fast paced and I binged it.

Gripping story
