About this listen

The Vagrant is his name. He has no other.

Years have passed since humanity’s destruction emerged from the Breach.

Friendless and alone he walks across a desolate, war-torn landscape.

As each day passes the world tumbles further into depravity, bent and twisted by the new order, corrupted by the Usurper, the enemy, and his infernal horde.

His purpose is to reach the Shining City, last bastion of the human race, and deliver the only weapon that may make a difference in the ongoing war.

What little hope remains is dying. Abandoned by its leader, The Seven, and its heroes, The Seraph Knights, the last defences of a once great civilisation are crumbling into dust.

But the Shining City is far away and the world is a very dangerous place.

Critic Reviews

'For fans of classic science-fiction literature, this is a must-read.' – SciFi Now

'Come visit this brilliantly imaginative land of winged swords and broken solar cells.' – SFX

‘The Vagrant is a joy to read: an original and engrossing world, a strong story and a protagonist who is intensely charismatic despite – or because of – his silence. Newman’s debut is written with confidence, flair and imagination, bringing his dark world to marvellously macabre life’
Adrian Tchaikovsky, Author of Shadows of the Apt series

‘A stunning and ambitious debut novel set in a unique and imaginative world where the only hope rests on the capacity of human beings to love’ Melinda M. Snodgrass

Oh my gosh what an amazing story! I have never read or listened to anything like this. I loved all of the characters and especially “goat”. But the biggest thing I loved was how it was written, the authors choice of words! Things like the wall made of oaths and wiping memories from eyes. Just magic. And the author effortlessly guides you from horror, to friendship, to compassion and anger. What a lucky find this was ! The narrator was just brilliant and can leap from the cutest baby ever to a horror in a second. I love this novel! I usually use audible as a background to my work etc but this is the first I’ve ever listened to where it held my complete attention. Not even Tolkien could do that but I didn’t want to miss a single word. Ah, brilliant…

Just magic

Not sure if its a good or bad sign that my favourite character was a normal Goat. Ambitions ideas, but it just felt like most of it missed the mark.

Goat was amazing.

This book stands shoulder to shoulder with the best fantasy novels written. The imagery is vivid, the story gripping, the characters unforgettable. The writing is complex and challenging but the pacing is precisely managed so the book is compelling. There is a sense of wonder that few authors achieve, and the mystery of the world lingers after the story ends. While a very dark novel, the author skillfully preserves a glimmer of hope throughout, sometimes in the most unlikely ways. This really is an extraordinary novel.
