Beth and Cath are leaving their husbands.

This is a story about two very different women.

One is wealthy and having an affair with a man who gives her the kind of love that her cold, detached husband does not.

One is living hand to mouth, suffering at the hands of a violent partner who would rather see her dead than leave him.

You may think you know these women already and how their lives will unfold.

Beth will live happily ever after with her little girl and her soulmate.

Cath will go back to her abusive husband.

And these two women will never cross paths.

But you will be wrong.

On the 3.15pm train from London to Bristol, Beth and Cath are about to meet and discover they share one shocking thing in common.

A clever, engrossing and absolutely enthralling listen about what really lies beneath the surface of a marriage. Fans of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train will be hooked on The Stranger’s Wife.

I enjoyed this book immensely. James narrated it really well and the book kept me interested right from the start. Well written Anna-Lou. Definitely recommend!

Awful awful rubbish

Oh I hate this story. A mean controlling man and a weak silly wife. I cringe to listen to this story. I absolutely hate it. I wish women would stop writing these stories. I sent it back.

Surprising find

Great read, kept me wanting to listen, twists you haven’t read before. The story and narration are fantastic. It kept reminding me of the Cormoran Strike series by Robert Galbraith (aka JK Rowling). I have not read any other Detective Dan Riley books and this is the third in the series and easy to read as a stand-alone book. I’m going to look up the others now.

Love this Author

This a new author to me and read The Stranger’s Wife first, but then went back and read her first two books Black Heart and Couple on Cedar Close. Listening to these books and getting to know Detective Dan Riley was a very entertaining and heartwarming journey. Especially enjoyed the detective’s very dry, sharp wit and keen insight into those around him, in and outside the office. Narration is outstanding. Several other reviewers said they could figure out “who done it” early in book, as did I, but who cares when story and narration otherwise so perfect. Will definitely look forward to more chapters in Det Riley’s life. If you like British murder mysteries as I do, most HIGHLY RECOMMEND this series🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

NOT like Gone Girl

I’m so tired of reviews comparing books to gone girl or the girl on the train. This book is nowhere near as good as either of those. Meanders along with no gotcha moments or any real tension. Good narrators though.

Hours and hours of tedious set-up (Spoilers)

Several characters introduced and gradually brought together, but it takes forever. I found the brutality inflicted on one character rather out of balance with the rest of the novel. The timeline is all jumbled up, but at least it's always clear (from the chapter headings) when this chapter is happening. But then it will skip forward 18 months and then jump back. I'm sure there's a method to this, but so far it's just kind of annoying.

The writing is fine, the narrator is good. But the characterization suffers from the need to make the husbands really terrible. (I know there are bullies everywhere, but they actually don't make for interesting characters, and the one husband's sudden transformation wasn't really believable.) The twist echoes one of my favorite Law and Order episodes, so I saw it coming as soon as I read the tag line on the cover.

I'll finish to see how she handles the twist, but I might be skipping some chapters of tedious setup along the way.

Stranger

Has anyone ever read strangers on a train or seen the 1951 movie? Exact same story line I think. I've l only listened to half the book I could be wrong but I don't think so. Good book if I only was not so old and can remember good books and movies so well. Still great listen especially for all the young'uns.

Great Murder Mystery

This was a great book to listen to. The plot was good. I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation trying to figure the story as if I was at the movies. The narrator did a great job.

It goes on and on and on

I find myself reading passages over and over b/c my mind wanders with this one. Does not make sense. Can’t get past the first 1/3 of book. Maybe it picks up later on, but, I’m not willing to find out. Narrator was good.

Good listen

Kept you listen and entertained, but the description of the story prior to listening ruined the twist, as that only happened in the last few chapters....

Implausible and waffles

Starts off okay but degenerates into waffling conversations in which things are tediously reiterated and where the characters make stupid decisions. There just is no reason why a certain item would be replaced or another not copied immediately several times by the protagonist - or why, towards the end, information is sent anonymously when it would be blatantly obvious to anyone who knew the couple. I could go on. I ended up fast forwarding chunks of this and got immensely bored. If I hadn’t been in the middle of cleaning my kitchen cupboards at the time I would probably have ditched it in favour of something else. Can’t believe it was ever edited.

Beginning was promising but

the last half was very droning and nearly seemed like a different story.
You read it from at the start what I suppose was the victims point of view but then from the the police detective which then is confusing as you don’t know who you are supposed to be following. No twists as you already know what happens. The story drones on and on from the last half of the book and you begin to wish it was the end already.
While the detective very very slowly works out what happened then bringing in his personal life which all seemed a bit half hearted and had no point to the story. Which you know already.
Feel the author got lost half way through and changed the concept of the book altogether. And couldn’t make up their minds who this was about.
Somewhere there is a page turner out there, for me this definitely isn’t one.

Excellent Series!

This is the third Detective Dan Riley book (this is not stated in the Audible synopsis) and possibly the best!
Excellent narration.

Not as good as the first two

Quite a good book and nice to catch up with the characters again and see Dan become a Father but the story line wasn’t anywhere near as good the first two books.

It all seemed a bit disjointed and hurried with no real connection.

Overall, a strange third book but good enough to read if you have read the first two books and want to here what happens next in Dan Riley’s life

I really enjoyed this book!

There wasn't anything I didn't love about this book, it was so well written, so well performed and I couldn't fault the story line! I found parts predictable but I think that's just because I'm obsessed with true crime!

If you are interested in true crime and enjoyed Gone Girl and Girl on the Train, this book is for you.

poorly narrated

I found the narrator very difficult to listen to. too many unnecessary pauses and drawn out faltering speech. it's a pity because I think it might have been a good story
