Publisher's Summary

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Silk Road, then pay attention....

The Silk Road, which has been understood as a generalized route of trade between the East and the West, is different from European, North African, and Near Eastern trade routes because until recently, it has been understood as solely being a land route; in fact, it was believed to be the longest overland trade route in human history.

The history of the Silk Road is extremely complex. It cannot be told as a singular chronological narrative. Different cultures and societies rose and vanished along the Silk Road, and peoples migrated from one region to another. In short, for most of its history, there was fluidity as to the dominant cultures along the route or routes. Explaining the rise and fall or disappearance of these cultures involves stopping along the way to consider the chronology of their histories.

In The Silk Road: A Captivating Guide to the Ancient Network of Trade Routes Established During the Han Dynasty of China and How It Connected the East and West, you will discover topics such as:

  • Rome, silk, and ancient geography
  • Han silk production and trade
  • The Kingdom of Loulan
  • Buddhists along the Silk Road
  • Turfan: An oasis on the Silk Road
  • The legend of Prester John
  • Genghis Khan, ruler of the whole world
  • The Lord of Xanadu, Kublai Khan: The Emperor of China
  • Marco Polo visits Kublai Khan’s China
  • The final years of Kublai Khan
  • And much, much more!

Understanding of the middle east.

As a couple of history buffs who believe they have learned everything, my husband and I have been hypnotized by this audiobook and suggest it to all our friends. Sorry, we are not lending it, not even to our kids!

Just average

Every history book tends to be good. This one is good too, but I was expecting more about the Silk Road and its influence than the history of the empires and lands across it. The book is also average because focus on random figures in order to tell the history. Finally, and this is personal, I don’t like the use of BCE / CE instead of the correct BC / AD.

Really good audiobook.

It is a captivating trip and shows that there was a lot of "international" trade and "globalization" from so early in the "known history" of humanity. There were a complete lot more Silk Roads than I had remembered about.

Wonderful Audio book.

This is not your average dry history audiobook. It is, in truth, one of the best books I've ever learned, and is full of fascinating things you never heard of before. You'll stay up late thought this one!

History told well

Simple history with an interesting theme. For those of us westerners who don't know much about Central Asia and the Silk Road, this is a powerful start to the topic.

History comes alive

Incredible audiobook! I got so much about the historical connections of modern life in Europe and Asia. Who identified Nordic countries were engaged in the Middle East? I highly suggest this audiobook.

Awesome audiobook

The Silk Road has ever been important and is growing more so with the New Road and Belt energy. I am especially impressed with how well researched this book is, and that still though it is very learned it is also written in very clear prose.

A good job.

It appears to me that an audiobook about trade routes, the rise and fall of nations and cities, and so on, would have plans in it, particularly since many users may be unfamiliar with the geography of the regions discussed. This need detracts considerably from the evidence of the story being told.

Timely

This audiobook gives a charming view of a history not much known to westerners. It is very clear without one major flaw, which is why I subtracted a star.

Not quite captivating enough

This wasn't quite what I was expecting. Interesting but more so if you're captivated by the history of the Mongol empire, of which there is a great deal. The OUP book on the Silk Road (in the Very Short Introduction series) is better. And yes, I know I'm being picky, but the narration by Jason Zenobia is rather odd. He deals very well with the difficult pronunciation of place names, then he pronounces phalanx as "faylanx"! Who in the history of the world has ever pronounced phalanx as "faylanx"? Think you're on your own there, Jason. And swathe became "swoth" to rhyme with "moth". Really? Minor but off-putting. Somehow his accent didn't help him. It was like an American trying to sound English and not quite getting there.

A fascinatingly different orientation to world history. Even though I majored in history many years ago in college It was always western civilization centered. This gives a new perspective and insight into the world.
