Publisher's Summary

The Downs, the poor district of the city of Avarest, is home to cutthroats and thieves, pickpockets and prostitutes, all of whom pay tribute to one of two powerful crime bosses.

It is also home to Aaron Envelar, a disillusioned sellsword known as the Silent Blade, who cares nothing for the criminal overlords or their schemes, who only wants to survive and make a little coin in the process.

But when a group of unwitting thugs steal his mother’s necklace, the only link he has to his murdered parents, Aaron decides that sometimes gold isn’t enough - sometimes, blood is the only payment worth taking. And whatever else will come, this time, he will not be silent. After all, when you take everything from a man, what else does he have to lose?

Good read and listen..

Alrighty, then! For a novella this had so much killing I couldn’t even tell you how many died. But it was actually a good little story and I might read/listen to another one about Aaron Envelar, of the Seven Virtues series.

No sex and the F-bomb was used 9 times.

As to the narration: Steven Brand did a fine job on the men’s voices and his emotions but he does need some help with the women’s voices.

Medieval John Wick

This novella seemed like a quick listen, but the words spoken even at 1.5 speed seemed to linger with the weight of anvils when transcribed by Steven Brand and directed by Jacob Peppers detailed writing.

However, as the title states, it sends strong “medieval John Wick” vibes. This isn’t necessarily bad; it differs in story of course but character mannerisms, dialogue and combat tactics are much better envisioned when comparing them to scenes of the famous action movie bent on the passion for revenge of an assassin.

The feeling that this listen slighted me was only prevalent when I remembered that I have seen this story before. I have to say though, it’s a fantastic little novella that is a great stand alone story. That’s what I thought it was when I first added it to my library... turns out that there’s a whole series that I have to listen to know...

Good intro

Normally I ignore intro book, as I see them as a rip off. They still are if there is a fee, but wth.
Glad I tried this one & will give the series a try.

A nice surprise

I got this free as part of my membership. I became totally immersed in the world the author created. This is a novella. So it is short. I immediately purchased book 1. The writing and narration are very enjoyable.

Brilliant

A brilliant little short story of the Dark Fantasy genre.
The narrator doesn’t do fancy voices, but his raspy tone is perfect for the story and environment, and his different inflections are more then enough to differentiate characters. 5 stars through and through.

Plot is lacking

This story goes into more detail about the blood, guts and wounds than it does about the main character. I found it boring and oddly repetitive for so short a story.

Don't Buy Into the Hype .....

Cons:

Narrator reads in a staccato manner - think of all the Captain Kirk impressions you've ever heard - and then downgrade that by 100 %

Pacing was slow. I blame that on the fact that the author tried to stretch a short story into a novella. It didn't work.

Derivative of every bad action movie you've every seen. Mysterious man with a past goes into a situation where innocent people around him die - but doesn't care until something he cares about is taken. The Great Value version of John Wick.

Writing was....uhm......less than stellar. The dialogue was painful and the action wasn't filled with much action.

Pros....

It was free? Yeah...that's all I got.

To summarize:

I wouldn't listen to this again and I would not recommend it.

Save yourself 2 hours of your life and skip this one. Seriously.... the 4/5 reviews are probably posted by family members or supportive friends.

This little Piggy, slice

A great little short story from Jacob Peppers world, A Seven Virtues series, Aaron Envelar is the silent blade, an absolute awesome character is driven to vengeance after his dead mothers necklace is stolen and people he cares for are hurt and killed in the process, its time for the blades to come out to play, for such a short story it has lots of action and very strong characters, love me some assassin stories, fantastic preformence by narrator Steven Brand, highly recommend....😁

Narrator spoiled it for me.

Narrator had a monotone voice and seems to rush the book. I had to give up in chapter 1. A pity really it seemed like it could be a good book.
Get it reread by Derek Perkins and I'll
Probably download the whole series.

Staccato narration spoils an ok story

Unfortunately the narrator seems unable to read in full sentences, relentlessly spurting phrases of up to half a dozen words, one after the other, which proved irritating to listen to, and detracted from the short story. The tale was just entertaining enough to want to hear the end but not exceptional and, very definitely, marred by the as stated annoying narration; a pleasant voice, but disastrous phrasing.
