Publisher's Summary

A gathering of seven bestselling crime writers at a Scottish Highlands book festival turns deadly in a wickedly dark thriller that pays homage to Agatha Christie's classic murder mysteries, from the bestselling author of The Bonnie Dead.

When legendary crime novelist William MacRae is found dead in suspicious circumstances at his Glasgow home, Police Scotland's premier investigator DCI John Lomond is put on the case.

After discovering a list of seven bestselling authors–all old friends of MacRae's–Lomond and his team head north to the Ullapool Book Festival, where the seven are gathering to remember their fallen friend.

But a vicious storm is closing in. And not everyone, it seems, has fond memories of MacRae. Or each other.

Cut off from the outside world at a remote country home, it doesn't take long for the whisky to flow, old resentments to reignite…and another dead body to appear.

Over the course of one weekend, Lomond must sift through a web of red herrings, secrets, and lies.

One of them is a killer. But can Lomond unmask them before it's too late?

Clever

I loved this book - I must admit I spent a considerable amount of time trying to work out which authors the characters were based on. Excellent 😊

Enjoyable till the end

I changed my mind a few times about the killer. This is a fabulous ‘who done it’ full of twists and turns, right till the end. The characters are very likeable and make you want to hear/read the next and the next and the next instalments of their lives and exciting stories by this brilliant author, I love Angus King’s narration, he brings the stories to life. I now HAVE to listen to some music. Onto the The Bloody Bloody Banks.

The sensitive detective

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and could not put it down, day and night. It mystified, encouraged me to try to solve the puzzles. I was moved to tears in the concluding chapter and was amazed by the result.
A great book, great plot, well structured, so that it flowed effortlessly.
The narration was well done - my only concern with Andrew Harries narration was that I was unsure whether I was listening to DCI Lomond and his team or DCI Logan and his team!! Great Scottish crime novels all!!

Let down by an unbelievable plot

John Lomond is a good character, so I kept listening, but the plot is so contorted it defies belief, even in a work of fiction. Plus, there was a really glaring error that was hard to ignore. Claire is 42, and yet had a 21 year old daughter that died 13 years before. The maths just don’t add up. There are a few more annoying errors, but they involve plot spoilers so not discussed here. Worth the credit, but I hope book 3 is an improvement.

Great Listening!

Great plot, likeable characters that show growth, hilarious banter between colleagues all make for a super story. Didn’t guess the outcome but that makes it even better. I hate guessing correctly too soon.

Easy to listen to like JD kirk tamed down.

Busy but interesting plot line. Picked the killer early in the book and it lacked umph but was still entertaining to listen to. So many characters it became tricky to keep track of each ones storyline. Raymond's writing is similar to JD Kirks( without the humour, depth of character and less profanity) meets Agatha Christie. will def listen to the next. love Angus king as narrator will listen to anything he is part of.
