Publisher's Summary

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Salem Witch Hunt, then pay attention....

Decades after witch-hunting had begun to die down in Europe, North America was about to witness its bloodiest witch hunt in history. The Massachusetts of 1692 was a very different one to the state we know today. Populated by colonists, many of them a generation or less from life in an England bathed in religious turmoil, Massachusetts was not the safe haven that the fleeing Puritans had hoped it would be. Persecuted for their faith in Europe, the Puritans had pictured a kind of utopia founded on biblical principles. They saw the New World as a new beginning, a kind of second chance for humanity. It would be only 72 years after the arrival of the Mayflower that the events in Salem would make it blatantly obvious that humanity had already blown it again.

This is not the story of the trials. This is the story of its people. This is not an attempt to explain the events of 1692. It is an attempt to bring to life the victims who died so unjustly. In this audiobook, we will walk side by side with the destitute Sarah Good as she realizes that after having lost all she owns, her reputation, her baby, and even her life will still be taken from her. We stand at the bar with Rebecca Nurse, a sweet, little old lady who is sentenced to hang for what she must have perceived to be the most heinous of crimes. We witness George Burroughs at the gallows, a former minister now condemned to die for his supposed alliance with Satan, as he delivers a speech so stirring that it takes quick thinking from his enemies to prevent the crowd from rushing forth to cut him down. We feel our own breaths catching as we watch the cruel and greedy Sheriff George Corwin piling rocks onto the fragile 80-year-old body of Giles Corey, who is determined to die without entering a plea so that his sons will still get the inheritance he promised them.

Surprisingly comprehensive, very easy to follow

This book is well written, clear, concise, and an easily understandable read. The author has done his homework and pieced together all the information regarding the circumstances surrounding some of the accused.

I love the the book but......

The Narrator almost killed it for me. Glad I kept on with it, but it took a lot of effort.

Good Overview

Good summary of the trials- enjoyable as a jumping off point for further, deeper research. The Audible version was ok, but less enjoyable as the “bass” was too high for many speakers in my home (blurred the words to just a jumble of vowel sounds), and a slight “hiss” in the background when the narrator paused.

Good info

This focuses more on the individuals of the trials, which is great because they were the actual victims. The trials were totally bonkers and ot is so sad what some went through. I wish dove deeper into the more brutal and gruesome things that happened, but it really wasn't this books intentions. Overall it was informative and there was a lot of info about the actual victims.

Excellent tale from the victims’ POV

Well done accounting of this terrible time in history told from the victim’s point of view as well as, in small part, the accusers, and not the typical overview account of the trials and arrests.

I really enjoyed it!

This is a short book about a subject I knew very little about. I think everyone should know how fear can change their thoughts and potentially kill people. I never knew that it was not facts that fueled the trials but bias, greed, and fear. I highly recommend!

Entertaining and informative

This book is an exciting book that brings to alight a new perspective of the Salem Witch Hunt. Entertaining and informative, this book appeals to both adults and teens. This book is a refreshing take on The Crucible, and I believe it will engage students much more so than previous work on this topic.

Which witch is which?

Some fascinating facts and stories behind a spooky and morbidly magical time in history that was informative and fascinating to listen to. The only problem here is at times I found the narrator to be a bit monotone and bland but it didn't stop me enjoying this overall.

Great depiction of madness

I think that this is a great audible. It is not only entertaining, but it also provokes thought regarding daily life and being quick to judge people without any form of validation.

What a sad chapter in our history.

Three hours and some minutes run time. I wish I noticed that before I got involved. That being said, it was a good history lesson and hard to believe this actually happened. It seems we humans are very flawed beings doomed to repeat our mistakes. Captivating History is beautiful, as always.

A Penetrating Portrayal of Scapegoating

An excellent audiobook that, from what I have read, accurately portrays the events of the Salem witch trials. It is hard to believe such a thing could actually happen.

Historical Insight into the Trials

The author links family disputes and a fracturing Puritan society together, and while he can propose some reasons for the causation of the trials, no one reason emerges as the total solution. The author does show how the victims of the witch hunt were first fringe members of society whom nobody liked, but in the end, even the most respected and established members of the community, like, were condemned the gallows.

I thoroughly enjoyed the audible.

The author seems like the right author to offer insight into a muddled yet fascinating time in early colonial America-the Salem Witch Hunt. The hysteria of the late 17th century still captivates people, and the author methodically works through three phases of the trials- important pre-trial occurrences, the trials themselves, and the aftermath of the witch hunt-in order to see what, if any, sense can be gleaned from the facts.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The stuff was unambiguous and straight forward, without any difficulty listening. The content was also very descriptive, that it is almost as if the listener is in the story. I thought this book had a great source of material from the past, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Fascinating for all history lovers.

This book answered most- if not all - of my questions on the Salem Witch Hunt. I would recommend this book to others to listen if they had to do an assignment on this subject or simply wanted to listen to a good book.

Guide to the Hunt and Trials

I really liked how the book showed the prejudice of some people back in history. I also liked how the author wrote an actual trial that happened to an innocent woman. What I found most interesting was how some of the descriptions in this book gave you a visual of how people thought a witch was supposed to look and act.

Through listening to this book,

I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to further their knowledge about the Hunt and Trials. What occurred is horrible, and through listening to this book, you will gain a better understanding of what all involved went through and have even more sympathy for those involved.
