Publisher's Summary

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Romanovs, then pay attention...

An undoubtedly interesting, exciting, and dramatic chapter of Russian history was when it was ruled over by the Romanov dynasty. This powerful ruling family came to power shortly after the frightening rule of a legendary figure in Russian history: Ivan the Terrible. After murdering his own son and unborn grandson, Ivan died without an heir, resulting in the formation of a new dynasty. This was the Romanov family.

The Romanovs included some of the most famous names in all of history, from Peter the Great, who expanded its borders, to the mighty Empress Catherine the Great, a powerful female ruler in a time of rife male supremacy and who is still a symbol of feminine power to this day.

The Romanovs ruled from the end of the Middle Ages to the dawn of a modern era that forcefully rejected the last Romanovs from a nation that no longer tolerated a monarchy. And every last one of these mighty monarchs had quirks and idiosyncrasies, likes and dislikes, pasts that were often troubled, and complicated family lives.

Every one of them was a person who was complex, intricate, flawed, and fascinating. Their stories range from the beautiful to the tragic to the bizarre. And in this book, they all are laid out for you to enjoy.

In The Romanovs: A Captivating Guide to the Last Imperial Dynasty to Rule Russia and the Impact the Romanov Family Had on Russian History, you will discover topics such as:

  • Russia Before the Romanovs
  • The First Romanovs
  • A Twisted Tutor
  • The Sons of Alexei
  • Peter the Great
  • The First Empress
  • Young Emperors and Empresses

This was a fantastical

I choose this audiobook to listen to because it was about the Romanovs. There was a brief time in my life where I was interested in the last czar's family so the title caught my eye. I'm still interested in the topic,

absolutely wonderful historical nonfiction

I found myself wishing the author would go deeper into the lives of the common people and help us understand the roots of the revolution better. But that is not within the scope of this book - this is a survey that has a lot of ground to cover and does a magnificent job of it.

history of the Romanov

I had been looking for a book on the Romanov dynasty and this was exactly what I was looking for. It's a unique and compelling read and quite a shocking insight into all twenty of the Romanov tsars and tsarinas.

detailed, researched history

Seldom - maybe never - has so much sweeping history been linked with a single city of such excellent greatness.

Amazing Emotions

Wonderful emotions of awe, fear, and a novel sadness filled me as I ran long into the forest of this narrative. What do I have to do with these events of a century ago and more? Why do they strike me so myself? Perhaps it is because these events and the actors, from the most influential rulers to the most innocent children, were essential to the creation of much of the modern world.

Most instructive

I particularly liked the view given in the introduction. However, the Romanov clan was a very crude, selfish, and ruthless bunch. The history of their antics was very dull. This is not against the audiobook, but rather the whole family.

Very Informative!

This was a very easy guide. The author describes the story of the Romanov family as well as Russia as a whole, and I found the whole thing fascinating. If you have any interest in the history of the last Tsar and his family, I would highly suggest this book.

terrific guide

I am not close to Russian history, so a lot of this was new to me. This is a solid, interesting, fonts investigated audiobook. If you know it, do not rush past the footnotes. They are full of engaging details.

Highly Recommend

I've learned so much about Russia and the Romonavs and still, this audiobook did not disappoint. Although it includes an expansive period, it is not boring and is not difficult to understand.

An epic historical novel!

Another great audiobook on Russian history from Montefiore who has previously given us fascinatingly written biographies of Stalin, Potemkin and Catherine the Great.

Exactly as described

This audiobook shows the user why Russia is the way it is now and has been. The country has never been a government and has never had a democracy. The Russian people would not understand what to do with democracy. It also shows the very violent side of Russia. Amazing, real history.

I thought it was good

I liked it very much. It looks to give a good insight into the history of the Romanov family. Also sort of suggesting where Putin may be coming from and some of his thoughts.

Good value

I had nevermore before thought of the Romanov dynasty strongly before, but as this comprehensive book shows, they were an interesting family with often almost incredible stories. It's a long read but that is, in this case, a sure; the audiobook retains on giving completely and I highly suggest it!

Absolutely worth listening!!!

Just sufficient to explain the history of Russian power in general and particularly the last Romanov royal family. The user will feel sensitive about the family yet know the rage of the Russian people.
