About this listen

Ryan: I'm the newest Captain of the Devils, Chicago's NBA team, and the last thing I needed this year was for Indy Ivers, my sister's best friend, to move into my apartment. She's messy, emotional, and way too tempting.

But when the team's General Manager vocalizes his blatant disapproval of my promotion to Captain, referring to me as an unapproachable lone wolf with no work-life balance, I can't think of a better way to convince him otherwise than pretending to date my outgoing roommate. The only problem? Faking it feels far too natural.

Indy: I never imagined I'd be living with my best friend's brother, NBA superstar Ryan Shay. Even more unbelievable? He needs me to act as his loving girlfriend who's suddenly changed him into a friendly and approachable guy.

Soon blurred lines make it almost impossible to separate real from fake. Falling for my roommate was never part of the deal, especially when Ryan is quick to remind me that he doesn't believe in love.

I'm a romantic and can't help fantasizing that he'll change, but soon enough, I find myself questioning if sharing a roof with my best friend's brother was the right move after all.

Contains mature themes.

Basically what the title says: FMC is an ever-positive, rose-coloured-glasses kind of gal and the performance really nails it.

The story is classic bookish escapism, so if you’re looking for fluffy and sweet you’ve got it. Fair warning: it gets sickly sweet at odd points, miscommunication and disrupted conversation are rife, and in my jaded, 33 year old opinion, the heroine doesn’t seem to entirely grow up (there’s growth, but most of us experienced those revelations at 22 and she’s 27), and she still manages to get it all without really working for it.

HUGE TW if you’re experiencing fertility issues. Mentioned frequently. Resolved neatly, which we know is not often the case with fertility issues.

Outstanding Performance - Especially Considering FMC Cries A Lot

Overview

Fake dating, found family, and a romance that actually feels real? The Right Move took me by surprise in the best way. This is Indy and Ryan’s story, a slow-burn romance packed with depth, emotional moments, and banter that had me hooked. While I enjoyed Caught Up, I didn’t connect with those characters as much—but this one? Obsessed.

My Thoughts

✔ Flawed characters = superior storytelling – Indy and Ryan aren’t perfect, and that’s exactly why they worked. They felt real, complex, and fully developed, which made their romance so much more satisfying. The lack of toxicity and actual communication between them? So refreshing.
✔ Fake dating + slow burn + found family – A winning combo. The tension, the build-up, and the genuine chemistry between Indy and Ryan made every moment worth it.
✔ Bookish references = automatic bonus points – Indy is a romance reader, and I loved that part of her personality. Any book that celebrates reading within the story gets extra love from me. Honestly, I’d join Indy’s book club in a heartbeat (and I might even give mafia romance a shot thanks to her recommendations).
✔ The banter was A+ – It was sharp, fun, and actually felt natural, adding so much charm to their dynamic.
✔ Perfect balance of heavy & light moments – This wasn’t just a fluffy rom-com. It had emotional depth without feeling overwhelming, making it a well-rounded read.

Now, why wasn’t this a 5-star?
• It ran a little long – This book could’ve been 100 pages shorter, and I wouldn’t have minded. There were a few natural stopping points, but Tomforde just kept going with some unnecessary third-act drama. (Had the same thought with Caught Up!)
• Why was everyone ‘popping their shoulder’?? – Seriously, this phrase showed up so often that I started to wonder if these characters needed a chiropractor.

Final Thoughts

Despite a slightly dragged-out ending, The Right Move is a solid contemporary romance with a couple that actually feels real, strong emotional depth, and just the right amount of angst. If you love fake dating, found family, and romance book references, this one’s absolutely worth picking up!

May a love like Ryan shays find me. That’s is all. Nope it wants me to write more. Ok. I will be setting an intention to manifest a Ryan shay.

Loved it but I must be in the minority because I preferred book one. Both narrators did a wonderful job and while I enjoyed the storyline I did prefer book one. Looking forward to book 3.
