About this listen

From The Wall Street Journal best-selling author Jeff Wheeler.

Before she befriended a frightened young boy in the palace of Kingfountain, Ankarette Tryneowy grew up during the shattering civil war that raged between members of the Argentine family. This is the story of how the only daughter of a lawyer and a midwife became the famed Queen's Poisoner.

Recruited by King Eredur's ambitious uncle, Ankarette is thrown into a world of double dealing, deception, and tangled loyalties. With the help of her mentor and friend, Sir Thomas, she must learn to trust her instincts and remember that others will not always be loyal, even when they are of the same blood. But involving herself in the machinations of the realm draws the eye of an enemy more dangerous than kings or dukes. How will she navigate the politics of the realm and the desires of her heart to become the woman she needs to become?

I previously started listening to the first book in this series though I am not too far into it, I really wish I had listened to this book, A Poisoners Enemy beforehand as it really gives you great insight into one of the main characters featuring in book 1 and also gives you the whole context of the realm for which it’s set.

I highly recommended listening to this book first and as with the other titles in this series, the narrator does a fantastic job at bringing the story to life.

It appears I've read a number of Jeff Wheeler books over the past ten years. The premise of his stories always appeals, but once I get into the meat of them, I start asking the same questions, such as "why do all these young girls have to keep proving themselves worthy?" and "Why are all the powerful men so intent on using young women for nefarious purposes?" and wow it starts repeating itself after awhile.
I'm seriously disappointed with myself. I recently wrote a scathing blog entry about the Muirwood books, then turned around and bought into yet another Jeff Wheeler series. At least I only bought the first one.
The narrator, Kate Rudd, is very good. The story, if you want your young female readers to grow into independent thinkers free of the patriarchy, is less than ideal.

How did I get sucked in again?
