Read, rewind, repeat :-/
Recently, I purchased The Plot Module: The Ultimate Chapter-by-Chapter Guide on How to Write a Novel Outline by Jason Hamilton on Audible, expecting a well-structured, insightful guide on writing fiction. While the book itself is full of valuable information, getting it in audiobook format was a mistake.
What Works Well
Depth of Content –
The book provides a detailed, step-by-step guide to outlining a novel, making it a great resource for writers who prefer a structured approach.
Clear Narration –
James K. Allen delivers a straightforward narration with a well-paced flow, making it suitable for passive listening.
Covers Key Aspects of Story Structure –
The book explores critical storytelling elements, including character arcs, scene construction, and overall plot development.
Major Drawbacks (Exclusive to the Audible Version)
Difficult to Reference – Unlike a physical book or eBook, where you can highlight and return to key points easily, an audiobook makes this frustratingly difficult. There are no bookmarks, quick references, or clear indexing.
Overly Wordy and Dense – While well-organized, the book is quite wordy, making it difficult to retain key takeaways without replaying multiple times.
Not Suitable for Audio –
The content is packed with details better suited for reference rather than passive listening.
Verdict: 2.5/5 (for the Audible version)
If you’re looking for a quick and accessible reference guide, this isn’t it. While the book may be valuable in eBook or physical form, the audiobook format doesn’t work well as a resource. I found myself constantly needing to rewind, replay, and take notes, which disrupted the learning process.
Recommendation
Skip the audiobook and opt for Kindle or paperback instead. The ability to flip through pages, highlight key points, and easily reference critical sections makes a huge difference.
If James would like to send me a hard copy, I’d be happy to give it another review.
