About this listen

'Set in an intergalactic war, this powerful story is told from multiple viewpoints and delivers an emotionally wrenching impact.' - Sally Morgan, author of the bestselling Australian classic MY PLACE

Shane Daniels and Romany Zetz have been drawn into a war that is not their own. Lives will be destroyed, families will be torn apart. Trust will be broken.

When the war is over, some will return to a changed world. Will they discover that glory is a lie?

Claire G. Coleman's new novel takes us to a familiar world to ask what we have learned from the past. THE OLD LIE might not be quite what you expect.

Critic Reviews

Extended Review
evoking the visceral war poetry of Wilfred Owen, the rich world-building of Ursula K. Le Guin and a dark, inventive wit that is all Coleman's.
The Old LieV speaks to some all-too-timely truths.

these proud indigenous men and women try to survive in a brutal, unfair world where an alien but familiar empire rules the space lanes. War is hell, but victory carries its own challenges for those deemed dispensable.

I started this book on audible with no background in the story arc, unsure why I had added it to my collection.

It started as a fantasy war story with a twist of Wilfred Owen who I love.

What surprised me was the depth and analogy of the futuristic plot with indigenous history in Australia and the slow discovery of each character’s family.

Beautifully told, capturing me and educating me as it unfolded. Thank you for creating it.

Adept analogy and story arc

A stunning follow up to Terra Nulis and second novel. As per the first novel, these ought to be curriculum reading in both the UK and Australia.
Highly recommended.

Stunning

I didn't want it to finish. Partly because I knew the ending. And because it was told as stories should be: pulling you in relentlessly.
